After owning a Freelander, which was great and would still have, if the problems started, electrical and mechanical. With the electrical problem we were just going round in circles, it spent weeks in a dealer work shop, even they could not work it out. Wasn't safe to drive in the end. I would go for the X trail.

X trail all day long. They did have turbo problems but the freelander as lots more problems so leave alone. Why not look at a Volvo V70 D5. You could get a good 04/54 plate for £5000

Hi Karen,

Do you mind me asking what the problem was with your freelander?  Ours spent over 2 weeks at local dealer and £250 later they are adamant there is not a problem even though it's been on the diagnostics etc and they've charged £100 an hour to look at it.

we brought it home from LR main dealer, OH starts it up and all the lights come on (traction control/ABS etc) and still getting a burning wire type smell which is exactly the same reason we took it to LR in the first place!

In response to the original poster:

If you have deep pockets go for the Freelander.  £1000 spent on our TD4 in just over a month and still not fixed.17

We think it was an indicator problem, in the dash, not really sure, never got it sorted. It started a year after I got it. When I indicated the all lights on the dash would flash , then just cut out everything, total loss of power, total engine shut down,no smell of burning, just a slight buzzing noise, like it was shorting out somewhere.
It was on the diagnostics machine, the dealer could not find the problem,(this was a first for them) it was intermittent (no laughing) and didn't happen all the time, so it was hit or miss. They were talking about taking the electrics out for the indicators and ignition and rewire it, that would cost more than the car was worth, I wasn't prepared to spend that much money on a car that was 8 year old.
Hope this helps, good luck.

We had a Freelander 1 on a 53 plate, and it was a fantastic car. The only reason it had to go was because neither the seat nor steering wheel were adjustable sufficient to provide me with a comfortable driving position....but it appears I am a slightly odd shape!

But it was fantastic to drive, reliable and pulled our van a treat. Exchanged it for a Discovery 2, which again was all of the above, but with fully adjustable seat and steering wheel, hence lovely to drive and again completely reliable.

Now got a Freelander 2, and it's the 'dogs'......!!!!! Comfortable, nippy, etc etc etc!

Test drove an XTrail and was sea-sick! Horrible driving position and felt like it was swaying all over the place - just horrible, and so glad we didn't go for it.

No contest for us I'm afraid - sorry to offer a contrary view to most other posters....!!

You know...I would buy a Pajero...if I wanted a "tow-car".

I keep looking at the ones on eaby and think they seem good value.

OH travels badly but is fine in the X Trail funnily enough.  We test drove a CRV and he didn't do well in that at all and neither did I, now that was a real sea sick feeling.  Horses for courses I guess.
