I have the passat 130tdi which is very good and very economical. I would recommend it highly. I know the Mondeo is also very good. Don't know about the avensis.

Presumably new cars?  The Mondeo was second in the CC towcar of the year last year, it was second to the Mondeo with the V6  2.5 petrol engine.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Hello John.

A very useful site to visit when looking for a towcar is
whattowcar.com. Apart from outfit matching etc, there are hundreds of reviews of cars by the people who tow with them.

VW Passat = Skoda Superb - except for price!
I have a Skoda Octavia 2.0L TDI 140BHP, which uses the VW Golf body pan, and it's the best towcar I've ever had.
My son has had a Golf TDI for almost seven years now, and although it's his pride and joy, once he saw how much more for how much less money he vowed that when he changes cars (perhaps this year) it will definitely be an Octavia....

Got to ask, if it's such a fab motor........Why do you want to change it?

I have one too. Had it longer than I normally keep cars and I keep looking at others but I always come back to "whats wrong with the passat" and I keep it. Its fast, economical, excellent tow car, comfortable and will do more miles than I will drive in my (hopefully) long remaining life.

That's what I keep telling myself about the diesel Omega, while it's doing the job why change. And if it doesn't cost a fortune to keep it maintained and road worthy it'll do for me.

Thats the dilemma. It is a superb motor and does everything asked of it but you can't keep it for ever.i've had it for nine years and its never let me down but its not getting any younger, like me,so its got to be another younger passat.

thanks for all the interest.  john
