This is my first posting .... please be gentle.

I know that the mazda 6 is a popular tow car and I am looking to buy the mazda 6 2.2d TS (163bhp). I currently tow a swift chrisma 535 (1330kg max load) with a mazda 3 2.0d 143bhp sport at approx 87% match. Pulls great on the flat an on slight inclines but slower up greater inclines. My last caravan was an Avondale dart 2 berth with max load of 1000kg - no problems towing with the mazda 3.

I feel that a change in car is needed...what do you think.

I do not want a 4x4 due to the increase in running costs.

hi and welcome to ukcs !!!

i cant get my head round this running costs thing. people are prepeared to blow £15k + on a towcar that will do half a job then lose £5k + in depriciation 3 years later when they can get a great used 4x4 towcar  for way under £5k.

no worries...no hassles...go anywhere..tow anything.

yes it will use more fuel & maybe cost more to service but £10ks worth ??  doubt it

personally think the mazda 3 whilst having a good power output on paper is a touch lightweight ?

heard good reviews on the 6 & very nice cars but again , not the heaviest of tugs  but should be ok with your van.maybe an issue if you changed vans in future ?

most towcars will suffer a lack of pace on steeper inclines , even 4x4`s.our paj will tow the house but is still affected even solo on steeper inclines.

good luck in your search !!

Problem with these newer cars, Built for economy.

No point in having 1000hp and 1000ftlb's of torque at 4000rpm.

If top gear revs at 1000rpm on the legal limit, Makes it useless.

1st, 2nd & 3rd gear if your on the flat.

The whattowcar website displays this, Says some cars can rarely use top gear, Where as a smaller engined car appears to have better towing figures.

The mazda 6 will be geared to reach 140 - 150mph on a good day, Where something like a suzuki vitara will be lucky to break the 100mph mark, no point in adding gears with too high a ratio. Just kills the torque.

The 6 is a good towcar, however if you are pulling with a 140horse diesel at the mo I don't think you will notice a huge difference especially as the 6 is heavier than the 3.

A colleague has one and its not really any faster than my 148horse new Honda Accord.

I've yet to tow with the Accord so cannot compare it to my old Volvo v50.

I would like a 4x4 but won't as the fuel costs/road tax etc are too high ( I do 40k miles/year)also I always seem to be overtaking them when towing!! but maybe not in muddy fields!!

i dont think people buy 4x4`s as towcars for the speed.think its more of a stability go anywhere thing.

We tow our Bailey Ranger 500/5 with a Mazda 6 TS 2litre d   (143bhp) (probably written in the wrong order, but I'm only a woman, what do I know? 24 It's red if that makes any difference)

No problems towing at all.

I had a Mazda 6 for 3 years and can confirm a very good tow car !
Tow weights are a little restrictive for large vans tho !
