Hi Team
anyone got any ideas for stiffening up the suspension on the Kia. we are considering using the Grayston Engineering additional coil springs to stiffen it up

Does it need it? Reason I ask is that I have not towed yet with my 59 plate Sorento. Its supposed to have a higher noseweight allowance than my old 56 plate one.

Hi David
the kia does tow well ours is a 57 plate and goes like an express train ! but when towing there does appear sometimes to wobble occasional like it is wallowing in the bends.
we tow at approx 84% and carry very little in the van.
we are thinking of stiffening up the suspension on the back just to stop the wobble effect. i understand the MK1 Sorentos had auto leveling system which isnt fitted to the MK 2. We have reinforced tyres with nitrogen filled which made a big difference

I would have thought that if it tows level then the problem might be elsewhere. Why I say that is that our next door neighbour had a few problems with stability initially when he changed from a single axle to a twin. He tows with a long wheel base Shogun. I think he solved the problem by experimenting with the loading of the van. It looks as though it will be some months before I get to tow with mine so can't comment on how I find the towing.

Try & look to see if Nivomat Shock Absorber kits are available for it. They have fitted them to volvo estate cars for year. They self level & stiffen up under load.
They are self contained & don't need a pump or electrics to level up. My Volvo XC70 as them fitted.

The van might need more of a load. An empty van often behaves totally different from a loaded one. Trial and error, I'm afraid, but of course don't exceed your maximum weights.
If that doesn't help, I would say it's probably worth checking your suspension bushes, especially if your vehicle is high mileage. The suspension - and usually the bushes - is more greatly stressed when towing, and and weakness will be highlighted.

I'm sure this is a dumb question - but why do you need to consider upgrading the suspension on a Sorento? It was towcar of the year and most owners seem to be over the moon with them. Owners of Shoguns, Landcruisers, Patrols, Troopers, Landies(?) and such don't have to upgrade their suspension for towing a caravan.
Surely, if someone has a stability problem using a Sorento, doesn't it mean that there is a problem that needs fixing (crackered suspension dampers possibly) or a caravan loading problem? If you really do need a suspension upgrade then you've bought the wrong motor.

From what i have read about the Sorento. The rear suspension is soft & wallows about. & after an upgrade the owners say it makes a world of difference.

We are on our second Sorento, first was a 56 reg XS, (mk 2) which towed very well. No problems with suspension.
Now have new Titan (one of the last of old model!) That seems a bit firmer on suspension, but it has 18" wheels so maybe they are stiffer, again seems to tow fine (only used it once so far!)

I have problems towing with my 09 Sorrento 2.5 ltr. It was very unstable over 50mph. I have changed all 4 shock absorbers - and had the tracking, castor and toeing done - It still wobbled when towing - quite unstable at over 50 mph. But not as bad as before ...
I went back to the tyre place to check the balance of the tyres. The front ones were a mile out and they were different makes.
I have put them on the back now and all tyres are perfectly balanced.
Going out next week to try the car towing again. If it is no better I will try upgrading the rear springs.
I have been towing caravans for over 10 years - not had this problem before. The X-Trail was wonderful. The van is correctly loaded the noseweight is 106kg. (Max 120 on a Kia)

Avon Eagle - we bought a new VW Tiguan a couple of months ago.
The Tig is supposed to be a brilliant tow car, but we found our Bailey Alutech almost frighteningly unstable (I've towed for many years, with many cars)
It was so unstable that I took it back to have the tow-bar checked, and also to VW to have the suspension checked!
I also checked out the hitch damper, Alko friction pads, Alko ATC, and everything else I could think of - but it still didn't feel 'right'
The Tiguan has very firm rear suspension so I thought that adding Grayston assistors was a waste of time, but decided to try it as a last resort.
They don't make any difference solo, but have really helped to cure the instability problem when towing - I don't know why - as I said, the Tiguan suspension was already very firm, but for whatever reason it was a cheap fix.
For £22.00 it might be worth trying them on your Sorrento.
------------- I glanced in the mirror, and it was love at first sight...

Thanks for that info Watt Tyler. I'm going to talk to the Kia dealers about the problem (If it is still not right) Check out the different options.
What did you actually buy - was it the rubber inserts or the extra springs. (Some fit inside the Kia springs - others go somewhere else - on the bracket I think. )

We have fitted the MAD springs to our 11 plate Santa Fe, this has resolved all the problems with hitching and towing. Prior to fitting we were unable to lower the hitch onto the towball, the van was too low, very nose down when towed, weight checked between 90 and 100k with Milenco gauge. When we took the van to our dealer for it's first service they could not believe the angle of the car and the caravan, rear of the car down and nose of the van down. The van was almost empty apart from a Calor lite with a small amount of gas. Fitting the MAD springs has given me full clearance and the unit is now level even when fully loaded with children, luggage and van. There is a similar thread running regarding the Sportage.
