Hi all,

I am just wondering if anyone uses a pickup for towing your caravans and if so how do you find them?

I currently use a 2006 Galaxy which is great but I am thinking of buying a pickup for work and wondered if they are good.

We got stuck in the mud last time we were out and needed to be towed off , so i'm trying to eliminate the possibility of it happening again.

Thanks Colin

We use both cars to take our stuff on holiday, mainly because I return home to go back to work, but also because we take a lot of kit.

We pull the van with a Mitsi L200 double cab Warrior. It's my vehicle for work but also treated as our second car.

It's very good towing as well as being well loaded with kit, it's got a hard top with a liner. I'm going to fit roof bars on it this year so I can carry the Kayaks on it as well.

I can't give you true towing MPG because I just fill it up on my fuel card when it needs it & I've never bothered to do a proper MPG check just when towing.

My two brothers & I all bought one at the same time, two were manual & our older brother had an automatic, he loves it but I've never driven it to find out how different it is to mine.

All the pickups should be at the NEC show next week, you'll be able to compare them in one hit there as well as get some quotes. Mitsubishi told me this afternoon, there's a new model L200 about to show itself.

My Navara averaged 23mpg on a 1500 mile trip from Belfast to France & back. Took 4 bikes (kids inside hardtop 2 on towbar rack) patio furniture, awning, lots of God knows what and all the stuff 2 girls & a wife need + my wee holdall. 140kg noseweight on pickups & capable of towing over 2 tonnes. You will never really need to worry about what you bring due to their weights. Solo, the reading today on mine is 33.7mpg which isn't too bad as I do a lot of town driving. Which one you choose is really a matter of personal taste, but they all basically do the same thing and all come with more toys as standard than many mainstream cars come with.

Just be aware of the bailey warranty condition, that caravan should only be towed by a car or 4x4 substituting as a car. Not sure how they define a 4x4 substituting as a car. Some other manufacturers probably have a similar condition.

I think they reckon the hard suspension on commercial vehicles shakes the caravan too much and causes cracking etc.

We have a Nissan Navara and would totally recommend it!! We used to have a Citroen Dispatch van which can get you into trouble at some council sites which do not accept commercial vehicles and we were turned away once!! But not with the pickup!! As long as it is clean!!!! (big problem with my husband using it for work in the woods) we now get no snide glances or if we do they are only jealous!! The pulling power is awesome and the luxury inside is second to none!! The only pitfall is the mpg which at 25 is not brilliant.

We have towed with a nissan navara loads of times it tows great as that is what they are built for mpg not very good and you may find the hitch to be a tad high biggest problem we had was from certain sites thinking we were from the travellers ferternity as ours had an open bed with no load cover, mind you if you fit a load cover they look just like a pathfinder!

but surely pathfinders have windows in back and ours is a solid cover no windows in side. anyway aren't gypsies the original caravanners and so something to be admired?? have you ever seen a clean polished and shiny nissan navara pickup - looks really class! not that ours is that clean that often!!
