just picked up our first wee caravan earlier, fleetwood 2 berth, towed it with my 330 bmw coupe. seemed ok to tow felt it pulling wee bit at times ..but id say that is normal.. ive never towed before! am wondering how it will be on petrol? or maybe i should buy a wee cheap diesel? any comments be very grateful.. cheers.
Hi wenz. I drive a 2.0 petrol vw passat and get about 35mpg. With caravan on tow this drops to about 23mpg. Caravan weighs about 1300 kg. Hope this helps
yes i was thinking it would drop that, supose its only to get to your destination, once you on hook, am looking forward to the summer breaks but nervous too at same time.. first timer :)
We were all first timers once! Got my first van about 5yrs ago and loved it from day one. Good luck with your van and happy camping!! If you want any ideas on sites to try [and maybe some to avoid] just ask! Loads of folk from norn iron on here always willing to help!
I Use a Passat TDi and 52mpg drops to 32 with the caravan on the back. How many miles are you going to tow in a year, how much will you save in reduced fuel cost, how much will it cost to change your vehicle?
If your not towing much it may not be cost effective to change. If you do change don't get a "wee" one. You need to think about your towing weights.
I don't think there is an urgent need to change cars and it's probably better to tow first with a vehicle you are familiar with. However, when you do come to trade your car I'd defo go for diesel as it does get better mpg, it's usually a heavier car (so better car to van ratio) and the torque is usually better too.
Try it first, with a petrol 330 Beemer there won't be such a difference in comsumption solo/towing than there would be with a samaller car. If you get a medium sized diesel car your consumption should be about 45mpg or more solo & mid 30s towing.

Thats a big difference ! Is your car labouring when towing to drop to that?
