i dont supose this info is much use to you, but we tow a similar sized and weight Lunar with a 1.8 Honda Civic with no real problems towing wise, but mostly being fairly new, they are maybe a little out of your price range if your looking for a cheap towcar.

Is that 1120kg unladen or max laden?
What is your budget? What do you need out of the car besides towing the caravan?
Petrol, Diesel, Saloon, Hatch, Estate?
4x4, 7 seats, MPG important?
Lots more info needed really.
Lots down to personal choice really, I wouldnt buy a renault laguna, I have never owned one but my sister bought one for £5k & the head gasket went the next day. That put me off but i guess there are many happy owners.
I have owned several mondeo's they have served me well.

I would go for the most power you can afford in a car for towing, you will probably be fine on the flat and motorways with a 1.6, but when it comes to hills and steep gradients that are tight and you cannot get a run at so to speak, or you find yourself in a strong headwind, then i think you maywell need a bit more power to make good progress with that weight of van on the back. Its no Joke trying to tow with a car that is under-engined for the need, I once towed a 1050kg MLW Avondale with a 1.5 Honda and stuggled badly, until it eventually burned the clutch out, dispite it being a good match weight wise using the 85% rule.
Try www.whattowcar.com for information regarding a good match before you buy.

Diesels cost more to insure than petrol equivalents. I could insure a top spec 220bhp V6 petrol mondeo for less than a basic 2L diesel LX.
Unless you do a LOT of miles petrol maybe cheaper to run that you think.
Everyone raves about diesels for towing, But to get the power increases people needed to think about switching they lost the diesels edge, TORQUE from tickover speeds.
Try stalling an old fashined lump of a diesel you will struggle, Modern diesels stall much easier.

My grampian is a fraction under 1200kg I have towed mainly mondeo's
2L Petrols, They tow well. Got a 2L diesel now but not towed with it yet.
My sister has a 2L diesel & she loves it for towing, Her caravan is 1100 kg. Much better than the 1.8 diesel focus she had before.
