I am looking into getting a towbar fitted so i can tow a folding camper. Could any one tell me the benefits and differences between a car specific wiring kit and a bypass relay kit? I dont think i need either but was just wondered what these items are all about, as I'm not to clued up on car electrics and wanted to be sure before i order.
JUst my non technical opinion - before anybody jumps down my throat - but....
A car specific kit appears to be easier to fit and less intrusive to the car electrics and so be less likely to 'offend' the manufacturer in terms of warranty. A decent auto electrician probably woulnd't need one but then there would be lots of joining of wires. Prices seem to me to be pretty much similar which ever route is chosen.
It would depend on the age of your car. If reasonably new it would be better to get plug in dedicated electrics. If your car is still under warranty, ie less than 3yrs old speak to your main dealer. They may fit towbars themselves or have a list of approved towbar fitters, so any work is covered by warranty.
While having a towbar fitted by a non approved fitter won't invalidate warranty as a matter of course, any directly related problems requiring fixing by main dealer will not be fixed under warranty.
Thanks for your resposes. So would i be right in saying, that if my car is out of warranty i neednt bother with the car specific kit or byepass relay kit?
What it means on my car is that it links into the car CANBUS wiring. That means my car knows when I'm towing so it adjusts the ASC (automatic stability control) and doesn't put on the car rear fog lights when I switch them on (only the caravan fog lights come on). If I had rear parking sensors it would disable those while I was towing as well.
Really depends on the age of the car. Most new/new model cars run with the CANBUS wiring which monitor the cars lights, abs, etc. If additional wires are joined into the lighting wires it can upset the cars monitoring systems and various odd messages will display.
Talk to a local tow bar company and if the car is still in warranty the dealer.
as said you will most likly need a wiring kit or relay if you have onboard lighting monitors, if not just linking into the rear wiring loom will do the job, its so easy with the specific kit it takes a few minutes to do the wiring save alot of time and worry,
ive always fitted my own bars and electrics and wouldnt use the specific kits only because of cost, if the price came right down i would use them.
HI, My mate is an auto spark and he has never used the car specific looms ,he uses two relays i got from towsure, mondeo 2.0tdci year 2004.hope this helps.
order a 7 way bypass kit and be safe, the polo is one of these cars that you wire staite in to only find you need a7 way bypass at the end of the day,

if you check my website www.lincstowbars.co,uk there is a little bit on cambus and multiplex electics that may help you in some way
Hi trailflash, thanks for that! could you tell me the difference between a car specific kit and the 7 way bypass? The bypass is about £20 and carspecific is about £50.
specific kit =specifide-may be by a towbar manufacture what they think you should use or a main dealer
7 way bypass is universal to all models where excepted which you have to wire in with clips,a specific you may just plug in , but may need download
