Hi, we've got a mondeo 2.2 tdci which we're about to use for towing but the towbar seems a bit low to the ground. It's a Ghia X and it had quite low tyres on it when we bought it in December.

Will we need to fit spring assisters to it?

Being a Ghia has it got self levelling suspension or is just the estates on some models?

I have fitted the Grayson assisters to both a Mk3 and Mk4 Mondeo Estate with the low profile tyres. They did keep the car more level when the van is attached and seems a smoother ride. They are loose on the springs normally and only have some effect once the van is on.

Hi, it's a 2005 hatchback and I think it's a Mk3. My other half said it's got self-levelling headlights but he doesn't know about the suspension. Would it be the same size assisters for ours as your estate Mk3, Brian?

I'm certain the self-levelling function is on the estate only.
I fitted spring assisters from Grayston Engineering, but these won't necessarily correct your problem. Spring assisters help to prevent the spring 'bottoming out' when towing or loaded but if your car seems unusually low I'd get the springs checked first because you might just hide a potential problem by throwing assisters on the springs.
What year is your Mondeo?

Yes, I've checked with Ford and it's just the estate that has the self levelling suspension.

The car seems ok, I think there's no problem with the springs. We used spring assisters on a Rover 620sldi years ago and it helped. I think our car just rides a bit low because of the low profile tyres on it.

The car is a 2005 model, G7ACU.

Yes carken the spring assistors are the same size for the estate and hatch. My mk 3 was a Ghia x but didn't have self levelling suspension. if you look on their website http://www.springassisters.co.uk they are the GE15 model

Im curious as to what weight the van is to need to fit spring assistors? I have a 55 plate Mondeo hatchback and pull a 1450Kg van and the back end doesn't sit excessively low. I know a bloke who pulls a twin axle with his and he hasn't got spring assistors either.

The profile of the tyre will not make any difference to the ride hight as the wheel diameter is ajusted to suit. it shouldnt matter if you are pulling a 700 kg van or a 1800kg van to the back end of the car as your nose weight of the van would be around 80-100 kgs. (1 x fat bloke) and im sure that tow bars are fitted to a regulation height, so as said if it looks a bit low there could be a problem with the car or excessive nose weight on the van (or to many fat blokes in the back of the car).

I do hope the noseweight is not 80-100kg and the max limit is 75kg on the mondeo.

Have you measured the actual towball height? Has the vehicle had lowering springs fitted?

A popular modification with the mondeo club members. Ford actually sell the kit & lowers the car by approx 40mm.

I have put an ad in Wanted for a pair of MAD aux springs. I used a pair of these on an old Cav we used to tow with and they were brilliant. I do have a pair of Grayston rubbers, but am wary of using them as I feel they would put unnecessary strain on the remaining coils. I know they do a good job, as I used them on the Focus I had, and then transferred them to the Rover, and ironically they are the same to fit the Saab, so they are good for all three cars.

My situation is that with the caravan correctly loaded, and a reasonable amoun t of stuff in the car, the caravan appears to be just about level but for peace of mind I wouldn't mind it being a SMIDGEON down. We run with the n/w at 75kg, max for the 'bar/car. As the rear of the car does not sag, and the springs being an estate are strong, I reckon if I loaded the car up a bit this would bring the 'van down a little. I will be trying this next week when we go away for the first trip of the year.

Maybe I wont need assisters at all but I am just thinking it through.

Would like a pair of those  (had a pair of AutoBallans on a Renault R20TS years ago - worked a treat, had a control for them in the console with an on-board compressor) But the Monroe not specified for my car - it is a Sport model.

May be alright though - I will be trying it next week with some crafty loading in the back of the car in addition to our normal noseweight of 75kg.

We don't get any pitching, and on the trips last year we had no stability problems whatever, even with a bit of wind here and there.
