i've just bought a tourer never really done it before but looking forward to it. just wondering do i need to tell my car insurance .only paid 700 for it so not really bothered about insuring the caravan itself or should i.any feedback could be great thanks
Suggest you check your policy to make sure you are covered and see if they require notification.
Strictly speaking your car has been modified with the fitting of the towbar and when you took out your insurance you would probably told them it had not been modified.
Any car insurance covers your caravan for third party risks while towing, read your small print. Once the caravan is hooked up to car it is one vehicle & insured for third party risks. Only the car is insured comprehensively tho, ie for damage.
If you want caravan insured for fire & damage at all times then you will have to insure it separately.
It's only £700 so it doesn't matter??????????? Till it gets stolen or damaged and you can't use it. Worth thinking about

I suggest you get the caravan insured. It's not just the value of the van itself that counts, but all the equipment and bits and pieces you have in it. I only paid £700 for mine but I insured it before it was even towed away from where I bought it. I went with the C & CC, £54 per year which covers the van, contents, awning, equipment etc etc. Well worth it should anything go wrong.

If you tell your car insurers they will not increase your premium so it has no implications for you, if you do not tell them then they always have the opportunity to refuse your claim because you failed to tell them something. Personally I try never to give them a chance to get out of paying up.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
Tell them you intend to tow - that way, they can't then refuse a claim should the worse happen because you didn't tell them!!
Personally I would think about insuring the van - the contents could easily add up to another £700!! Plus, the caravan is only covered by your car insurance for third party whilst it's actually attatched to the car. Once on site or in storage it isn't covered at all.
I would definitely tell the insurance company, too, just to be on the safe side.
I know a tow bar is, strictly speaking a modification but nobody's been the slightest bit interested when I've said I've got a tow bar.
Regarding insuring the caravan - it's not just your bits and pieces that would be covered (a lot of the contents will probably be covered on your household policy anyway) but any damage it might do to anything or anybody else, if it "strayed" while you were moving it and hit someone's car or something like that - unlikely, maybe, but you never know. Peace of mind for £50-odd.
I would certainly get it insured for exactly the reasons the poster above highlighted. One of my mates was hitching his caravan up at the storage site and bumped somebody elses caravan. Expensive!
I swapped insurance companies this year, Some of the questions asked make me think, I dont care how cheap you are i wouldnt use you.
One asked if the car had any modifications, NO i said, Their reply was any optional extra factory fitted accesories.
How would i know that? Would they refuse my claim if they found my car had an upgraded interior light with 2 bulbs instead of the standard single bulb type?
When i finally chose a company they didnt ask but i thought it wise to mention i was going to fit a towbar.
