I guess so, take a look at http://www.whattowcar.com/ and plug in the details of X5 and the possible new van options.

I have seen quite a few X5's towing.

You don't really get much heavier and bulkier for towing than those things.

Until you hit the grass. Top Gear did a review and they weren't that great off road. But then again how many X5s are bought to go off road?

hi lizthomas, make sure that the x5 you are looking at is fitted with the upgraded fan and if its an auto that it has the larger oil cooler.

there was a write up in practical caravan mag about it a while back..

I have an X5 56 plate 3.0D auto.  On road this is the best tow car you can buy! If you plan to tow your van across muddy fields then take a look at something else!

I've had Shoguns, which I would happily have again, but I use my car for business and towing, and the Shoguns are a bit on the agricultural side.  In terms of stability and performance the X5 is brilliant.

Running costs are surprisingly better than Shogun: 20k miles servie intervals (had 2 now at less than £300 each), 30k miles for tyres (although they are big cost at £750 for set). But, this car puts a smile on your face either solo or towing.  Happily answer more questions.

Dan

we just towed with ours for the first time.   On the road great but then we had to park our folding camper on grass!     The grass was quite muddy and the car was instantly stuck.   Several campers and rubber mats were needed to get the car back out.

Wow, I'm amazed it got stuck so easily.

There was a guy on a motorhome forum I use with pictures from over Easter on a site they went to. The only vehicle that kept going all weekend in the mud was a Nissan Terrano II. It was needed to pull out Range Rovers!

Oh yes it gets stuck at the slightest challenge.  it was also grounded for most of the snow this winter and could not even leave the drive despite being flat and also living on a very flat road too.

Digging out quite an historic post here, but thought rather than start a new thread I'd hijack this one to bring it to the surface again...we are considering a 7 seater 3l auto.

For those who currently own one, or have owned one. What are your towing experiences? Not too bothered about the off road side of things, more the actual towing experience of an 1800kg TA caravan.

Just get a decent set of all season or winter M&S tyres rather than the standard 20 inch rubber band blings and you will be fine off road as well!
