i have just bought an 06 nissan x-trail with 44k on the clock, it has full nissan service history so the fact that nissan has extended the warranty to 5 years on turbos i am not overly concerned about that issue.
however i was contacted by warranty direct to offer me a full gold cover which appears to be very comprehensive for the sum of £299 for 12 months but when i said i have a 90 warranty from the dealer they said that if i take out thier cover now and do not claim in first 90 days they will take 12 months from that time which effectivly gives me 15 months cover and if in the first 90 day period i make a claim then the 12 month cover starts from that date.
it sounds like it is good but i would like anyone who has experience with these type of warrenty to give me some feedback. i have seen bad reports about black horse and loyds but the worst i see about warranty direct was they did not cover front headlight washers failure on someones car and they were miffed.
this will be the first of these warranties i have used so do not know much about them.
from what i can gather the x-trail does not have much faults other than the intercooler and turbo so am trying to weigh up the whole thing.
any info or thoughts please let me know,,,, any help appreciated.
thanks in advance.

also if there are any other things to watch out for that can go wrong on the xtrail then please let me know this also

Problem is the warranty doesnt usually cover wear & tear items which virtually everything is these days.

Doesnt cover the cost of finding the fault or electrical problems.

Waste of money, Buy from a reputable dealer & if it breaks & they dont help, take them to small claims.

the read up on this policy states that it does cover electrical and also wear and tear items like wheel bearings, clutchs, suspension, turbos, etc, he did say it would not cover things like brakes, tyres, glass and upholstery.
i know it is one thing saying and another thing doing so this is why i am unsure.
the dealer will not be expected to help with anything after the 90 day period is up no matter if you threaten with small claims or not so it is after this time i am trying to keep myself right.

Really don't know why you would expect a dealer to sort out anything outside of their warranty period and why you would want to waste your time on small claims when they have no liability.

I have looked at these warranties but came to the conclusion that you needed at least one substantial failure outside of wear & tear every year to justify it and only one car in my 43 years driving has achieved that.

 If its any help to to you the reliabilityindex.co.uk is formulated by warrenty direct It makes for some very interesting reading  as to what are the good and the bad cars.A lot of the information is contrary to popular opinion, and a shock for some.

i have seen more and more claims of x-trail turbo horror stories since i have went on the net to see how bad it is.
it does seem that it is an issue however it is covered til next year by nissan (well supposed to be).
the thing is that it is the exact same turbo on the other nissans including the primara but they do not seem to be getting the same slateing.
i spoke to a nissan dealer who said he had seen more primera failures than xtrail and even that is only a handful each year.
he suggested that it is because people report the bad times and bot the good times.
probably true.
anyhow, i think i will chance not taking the warranty.
a new turbo from the dealer has fallen from over £1000 to just over £500 in the last year he tells me.

besides he also said that the fact that x-trails have sold something like 10,000 each year since launch (over 80,000 in total)which seemingly is a big portion of the uk market to date then there will be a chance of more stories of failure even though not any more in proportion.
i just hope all goes ok,,,,

I  had a warranty direct cover my Vauxhall Signum, but when you try and make a claim they wriggle out of it by saying it is wear and tear! My inlet manifold went and no3 injector and they would not pay out due to wear and tear, cost me over £1200 to fix. I personally would never have another warranty like that, they are not worth the paper they are written on!!!!!!

Yes but its 15 years old now. Still never let us down though.

Also got a Volkswagon and a vauxhall and a little surprised to see vauxhall (slightly) ahead of the volkswagon on the reliability index. All performing ok though.

I took out cover with warranty direct when my BMW came to the end of the manufacturers warranty.  Only had to claim once in 18 months but they paid up no problem and when I asked the dealer what the cost of the repair would have been to me, it was more than a years premiums.  So one claim a year would have been enough to make it break even.  I had the top cover, so I could take it to a main BMW dealer for any work, and it covered all the wear and tear items.

I had quite a few problems with the car while it was under manufacturers warranty, and that is the reason I took out the cover.  Thankfully the car behaved better once it was out of warranty.
