Any of these towcar owners can tell me if these engines are fitted with a Timing Chain or Timing Belt?. It is a 2001 model, Automatic, also any comments on them as a towcar and information on the dreaded fuel consumption when towing.....Many Thanks in advance...
Timing Chain
as a towcar/ Brill. make sure air suspension works ok.
fuel consumption/ you may get 15mpg towing.
The sound off them/ Its worth the 15mpg just for the sound of them.
Timing chain mate brill towcar again make sure the air suspension is fully working,i have a 2.5 dse manual and chipped for better perfomance and fuel consumption, pulls my 1465kg bessacarr 550 gl cameo twin wheeler no probs,i get between 20/25 gallon on the motorway,it would a bit less for the model you are asking about but consider a gas conversion!! i've been told manual gearbox is better for towing more accesable torque,i had a 2.5 dse auto before a bit sluggish unless your in sport mode then it drinks the diesel,a petrol auto v8 will tow fine but drink the petrol,go diesel if you can it will pay off in the long run!!!
Be very carefull if buying one of these, make sure it's got a good history and that everything works as it should, do your research well and you will be rewarded with the best towcar ever made but, get it wrong and you will be broke in a few weeks, looking for a second car and swearing like a trooper!
The engine is a version of the old 3500cc from the first Range Rovers and earlier it goes back to an American Buick, they didnt like the Aluminium engine with some justification, the 4.6 has some common issues relating to head gaskets and cylinder liners and is a little overgrown for it's block.
I'm afraid I know nothing about the timing chain/belt question, but as far as fuel consumption is concerned, you'd be well advised to have it converted to run on gas. The mpg wil be the same but the cost will be almost halved.
They're superb as tow vehicles, I know a chap using one to pull a heavy trailer around the countryside roads & lanes all day & he loves it.
Having one gassed may even reduce the emmissions & drop the cost of the RFL, that'd be worth looking into.
