The C5 has been well regarded in the media as a tow car. However, what's the exact spec of your C5 e.g. saloon, estate, year, engine etc., as there's quite a varied weight difference across the whole C5 range and some even have a limited maximum towing weight.
I tow a 1000kg pathfinder with a new shape C5 2litre diesel. This is light weight towing as far as the car is concerned . I feel sure it would tow halve as much again with ease . The low down torque of these cars is quite incredible it will pull away from 1500 revs quite sharply even when towing , and its far to easy to be well over the spead limit in a very short time ,so care needs to be taken . The MPG seems to be good I havent as yet done an accurate check so cant quote any figures . I love this car to bits and find it hard to think of anything negative to say about it .The only down side is the size of it , parking in supermarkets can be awkward at times.
I beg to differ about resale values of the C5 being poor . There is very big demand for these cars with used ones being in very short supply . Have a look at what the dealers are asking for them the prices are well above book price. When dealers are able to get them they are almost always snapped up within a couple of days. It took me several months to find the model I wanted .But it was well worth the wait .
hi we tow with a 2litre diesel c5 estate 03 reg it does the job really well its good on fuel (over 30 mpg towing) the self levelling suspension is first class , cheap road tax £120 a year . we bought it at 3 years old with 40000 miles showing for £6000 i wouldn't hesitate in buying another

ditto the above with slightly heavier van, returning 45-48 solo (with heavy right foot) and 28 towing. 19k miles now with no problems.
Parking issue not a problem, went for the parking pack ! lol its a god send !
Husband has just got rid of C5 (51 plate, 2.2HDI estate) proved to be temperamental. Nice big boot, all the gizmo's, plenty of power, good MPG but had a mind of it's own. Doors not unlocking, windows opening randomly & then unable to close them, completely cutting out suddenly when your turning right
Last straw came when we took our first caravan on it's first outing last weekend & the car had a tantrum on the motorway on the way home. Ended up in limp home mode (which was good) but just diagnosing the problem would have cost an arm & a leg. Even normal servicing costs are horrendous.
I reckon with Citroen you either get a good one or you don't. Know a few people who are happy with their froggy cars, but we won't be touching another one with a barge pole
query re the "self levelling suspension". when a caravan is attached the rear end of the car is going to go down a bit, so does the car "self level", if so-when?, or do you have to use one of the buttons on either the centre console or the boot to raise it back up.
hope this daft question makes sense!!
taking the van to ropers in catterick next saturday so will let you know how it tows.
regards, simon.
------------- just cos you got the power, that don`t mean you got the right...
A switch in the boot allows you to raise or lower the car to assist in hitching up, the car returns to level when the tailgate is closed.
I have a C5 2004 2ltr tdi estate with 70000 on the clock, had very little trouble, just a rear wheel bearing which was quit expensive at £ 220. Towing at 97% I return 30 to 32 mpg. and around 45 mpg solo. The later model is heavier, and would be a better match for my caravan however it is more expensive.
