This is for anyone thinking of buying the santa fe 2010 with a dealer fitted fixed towbar.

Be aware that they only fit the standard towball and you will need to negotiate for them to fit an alko one before taking delivery or give it them to fit for you. I didn't realise there were 2 types until trying to hitch last weekend. Fortunately I was only checking everything the weekend before we go away so have managed to change it.

Also if you have the 4 thule bike rack as well fitted then you will need a 1" spacer fitted to give the hitch enough clearance from the bike bracket. My hyundai garage told me I would have to remove the bracket each time I wanted to tow!

Anyway it was all easy to sort thanks to some advice from fellow campsiteuk users, Michael and Tentz. Thanks again.

Plus, I actually towed with the car for the first time last night getting my friends caravan out of storage. Only 3 miles but towed beautifully!

I think its worth remembering a car dealer workshop while able to fit a towbar/electrics will only understand about towing & caravans in particular if the actual mechanic is a caravanner himself. He might be capable of correctly bolting on the component parts but it is not part of his remit to know about Alko stabiliser hitches on caravans. Plenty of 4x4 owners tow minidiggers, horseboxes etc but not caravans.

It is up to the caravanner himself to understand what is required to tow his caravan & one would hope a caravan dealer would ensure the customer's car is suitably equipped to tow the caravan the dealer has just sold him!

There is also a legal grey area about spacers & drop plates behind towballs. If the spacer/drop plate is regarded as part of the towbar then legally it needs to be type approved along with the towbar, which of course it won't be. Which could account for the dealer/towbar fitters' reluctance to fit these items.

Anyway, glad yer got it sorted James & it does show that it helps to gain knowledge on these matters for yourself.

Hi JamesA114

I'm awaiting the delivery of a Sante Fe later next month. I have asked for a dealer/factory fitted towbar. They're fitting a 13 pin socket. I assume you might have a 13 pin push and twist socket fitted.
Can I ask if all 13 pins are connected?

I forgot to check with the dealer if the pin for battery charger and fridge would be connected. What was your experience?

I might have better check with the dealer

Interesting, when i ordered mine the dealer 'fobbed' me off. If i wanted the Hyundai towbar,it would be fitted at where the car's are imported - this would cost £451 & they get a mobile fitter in anyway.

If he arranged it (still mobile fitter!!) cost £331

Not sure whether to bother or arrange it my self.
Does any one know if the Santa Fe has a wiring loom point for the electrics?

Car apparently docking on 8th June - only waiting since Jan
