??? What do you tow thats taller than the discovery?

They may work in a wind tunnel after testing all possible fixing positions. But i have my doubt's as to any effect in real life.

Adding an aerodynamic roofbox uses more fuel when not towing and also whilst towing.

I remember them being sold years ago and then vanished now appearing again.

I remember them the first time round (yes, I am elderly....) I have concerns about the loading on the rear axle of the towing vehicle - must be a down-force there.

There was an article in this month's CC magazine.  I was quite interested as it was stated that purple line had done extensive testing on it........that is until I realized that it was an advertisment feature.

They should not really be allowed to publish adverts dressed up as magazine articles.  Very misleading.

I met a fellow Disco3 owner towing who had the LR topbox located just clear of the tailgate.
He claimed it made an appreciable difference to improving his long distance MPG.

I suspect things are very critical to factors such as the vans front aerodynamics and length of the van's "A" frame.

We changed two years ago from a square cornered 1700 kg van to a radius cornered 1900kg van. Staggered to find the new heavier van has consistently yielded a tad better MPG. Could be engines also now more settled/has later software etc etc. Best results [22/22.5 mpg]are on calm days at 55mph where it holds 6th hour in hour out.

My mondeo gets better MPG figures above 60mph in 6th gear.

Dropping below 60mph affects the economy, 70mph and a bit actually gets better figures than doing 50mph.

These may work if you could test it in a wind tunnel 1st and try moving it a mm at a time, But if changing van you would need to do all that testing again.

I still have my doubts. My car said i was doing 72mpg after i filled up today, It lies of course. The road was clear and had a downward slope to it. A couple of short stops start journeys soon had that down to 42mpg.

Another thought look how close they fit them on goods vehicles, And the shape matters a lot.

They have to be very close to the van otherwise you simply create a large amount of turbulence, only good thing my dad used to say about them when they were all the rage was that there was no dead flies on his van windows!!

Also for those who are in 6th at 60mph towing, you are bordering on labouring the engine and increasing mpg, which some do report, my onboard computer tells me I'm better in 5th on the flat at 62ish and 6th on a slight downslope. I've tried various ways of improving the mpg over the years, one test was to follow trucks on the way to the site 100m away using their slipstream, then drive as normal on the way home, the result, no difference in mpg!!

You were not following close enough

If your close enough you should not be able to see their brake lights. Does pose other problems though, That rear bar is generally a lot stronger than your front bumper.

Want the best MPG travel when there is no traffic. Sitting at the lights soon eats away and any mpg savings.

Hi.......i'm new to this forum so firstly HELLO!
Can anyone tell me if they own an Aeroplus wing and secondly have they noticed any radial cracks in the wing around the two roof bar mountings? I bought one when they were first available in June 2009 and only been used a dozen times and covered no more than 1,500 miles, I was horrified to find the last time I came to fit it to my car that many major cracks had appeared mainly visible from the rear of the wing but the cracks go right through to the front of the wing. I shudder to think what would have happened if this had gone unnoticed, possibly the whole wing apart from the two mounting brackets could have flown off and into my caravan windows at best, at worst into the windscreen of a following vehicle with dire consequences. At this moment in time i'm struggling to get any sense from the company who I purchased the wing from because it is just over the twelve months, 14 to be exact, and the distributor Purpleline, although concerned are waiting for my outcome from who I paid my money to! and to top it all both the managers at the retailer & distributor are on holiday and no-one can comment until they return.........which sort of leaves me in limbo! On the plus side, although I can't really say that my fuel consumption has improved any when using this product (Aeroplus wing) my right foot tells me the engine is not under as much load and with out doubt the stability of the car & caravan is greatly increased both when overtaking HGV's & coaches etc. and also when they overtake me, and also I have noticed my outfit is more stable in cross winds, therefore i'm reluctant to tow without it in future. I urge anyone who has got one of these Aeroplus wings to check it very carefully for any cracks and if any are found refrain from using it until it is reported to the company you purchased it from and the distributor Purpleline........also I would be great-full for any reply to my comments in this forum.

I run with one & love how stable it makes every thing. The only problem i had was that the default angle was to steep & i was having to go upto 65 to 70mph to make it work. I have made some new brackets for it with 12 degrees of angle taken off it. & horping this will make it work around the 60mph mark. I am off to st ives tomz so that will be a big test on if i got the angles right. I have had a look at mine tonight & cannot find any problems with it. I have done about 1000 miles with it. What i will say tho is that i have had the weld on one of the brackets that the threaded rod is connected too fail. So when i made new brackets i got all new nuts & bolts just to be sure. I only found this out last week so i will be on to them about the failed part when i get back from holls. Another thing i would say is that alot of roof bars are not strong enough to take the twisting action forces of the wing. & this makes the wing shack about. I made my roof bar my self to take these forces.

To Gazza12345, I would be interested in your comments on your return from st.ives and what vehicle you use to tow with ?, please post on this forum your findings on the results of your modified brackets, your outcome with your supplier over the original failed brackets, and please inspect your Aeroplus when you return and post comments on if you have noticed any cracks in the wing, I would also be great full if you could send me digi photos of the brackets you have made to   alanpennington86 at sky.com    If memory serves me right, the distributor Purpleline advertised additional brackets with a diff. angle on them as on optional extra, not sure how much they were or if they were any better or stronger than the standard brackets supplied with the wing.
Please keep in touch, regards.

It run like a dream with 12 degrees of angle taken off it. & it returned 29.6 mpg on the way down there. The best its ever done. I have not done the calculation for the return run yet. There is another modification i want to do when i get time. But it makes it that stable i would never run without it. It does that good a job. I know there will be people who say they don't work but how can they comment on something they have never tryed. I will get some pics on here for you soon FLUFFY ALAN.

I run a Buccanner double axle and I've recently changed my car from a 4.2 Landcruiser to a 420 M class MB. Ever since I've had the Buccanneer the front window has suffered from the two layers of double glazing chaffing together at motorway speed (60mph). In my mirror I can see the window flexing when the sun is at the correct angle. Having read the previous posts I wonder if anyone has found the Windslammer eliminates this, as I've been considering replacing the window but don't want the same damage to happen again.

I am sure it would deflect wind pressure away from the windows. On estate/mpv & 4x4 with flat back ends. The air comming off the back of them goes downwards & hits the caravan about 1 1/2 to 2ft lower then the roof line of the tow vehicle. So putting a Windslammer on should move the air higher up & deflected it over & around the caravan. I must say that the purpline aeroplus windslammers default angle setting is to steep & gives big drag. I modified its brackets & took 12 degrees of angle off it that sorted it out. They do sell brackets that take about 10 degrees off them. Its trial & error to get it right. My rule of thumb would be if you feel like its draging at say 60mph then take some degrees of it. If you do want more info then just ask & i will go into more depth about setting them up & how to get the right angle. I hope this helps.
