I have a thule 4 bike carrier which attaches to a bracket behind the towball. It is really easy to use but when towing I always put the 4 bikes on the roof as it spreads the weight evenly plus I have a max 80kgs nose weight which the van uses up. as others have said don't put bikes on the back unless you tow with disco or pathfinder etc.
With bikes on the roof you can still easily access the boot too but you will lose 3/4 mpg!
