I have a 2003 Vectra 1.8, which feels a bit sluggish when towing.

I was considering in using super unleaded next time I tow the caravan.

Has anyone tried this and does it make much difference to performance??

You would be hard pushed to tell the difference. If it had a turbo then the ecu could take advantage of it. i would not bother. save your money & get another pint with the change..

I tow with a 2001 Vectra 2.2 (petrol) - the super unleaded makes a difference, but not enough so that I would pay the extra.

You need to run it for a significant time (~1500km or more)  for any enigne management system to adjust the mix for the higher octane level - generally why most people don't see much/any difference when trying it out. Not likely to make that much of a difference to your's anyway unfortunately - I suspect you need more low end torque.

i use it full time for the simple reason these fuels have cost millions to develop.i also think you get a few more miles to the gallon (3 probably) using the finer fuel.it also keeps your engine and all parts clean.just my opinion though.

Regardless of which fuel is used, I think the best improvement in MPG is to adjust the method of driving when towing.   For example, if I come up behind a lorry at 58 mph, I simply remain behind him.  Accelerating to overtake and hold 60mph isn't worth the extra demand for fuel.  I also use the cruise control and make any adjustments with that control; much more precise than using your foot.  Maintaining a good distance from thr vehicle in front reduces the incidence of braking and accelerating; another cause of increased fuel consumption.

I have also noticed that there is little or no difference in MPG between 5th and 6th gears.  5th gear slightly increases RPM, but this is offset by improving the power-to-weight ratio.

Bertie.

Cheers for the info Bertie.

I do tend to use cruise control when I can, I have noticed that 1st,2nd and 3rd gear are pretty good pulling, the problem is maintaining a suitable speed in 5th of which is ok on level roads but when faced with a slight incline have to knock down into 4th and there is very little difference, and very often have to knock it down to 3rd. (problems of having a vectra 1.8 ecotec engine) Last year on a long run was getting about 28 mpg.

Having only towed for about 2 years i will probably get better with a few more hols.

Cheers

Ian

I use the BP ultimate diesel in the car, can tell a difference in terms of performance but cant say I notice any difference in economy. I just like the thought of it keeping the engine cleaner especially the injectors after forking out £940.00 for a new set in Jan.
