Hi

I recently bought a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee for towing, and have been unfortunate to get a nail in the front nearside tyre.

So I'm looking to buy two new front tyres, 225 75 r16. I normally get my tyres from etyres, but on looking there I don't recognise any of the makes on offer!

Any suggestions on the best type & / or make would be greatly appreciated.

I found this when looking for tyre for a Hilux, didn't recognise any of the brands on offer apart from the very expensive ones :(

have a look at mytytres.co.uk as most will have a link to tyretest.com so you can get a view on how the tyres actually perform

I don't know which you have looked at, but you will not be disappointed with General Grabber AT2 All Terrains.

I have them on the Patrol. They are quiet on tarmac for an all-terrain. Road holding is great on both wet and dry roads. They are great off-tarmac and fantastic in the snow.

We had Kumho fitted to our last Sorento, good price and grip.The tyre place said they sell a lot-mid range type tyre.

BF Goodrich are very hard wearing but pricey, Grabbers supposed to be good too.

Etyres do both Hankook & Kumho in your size of tyre both makes are resonably good.
Think yourself lucky you dont have a later model Cherokee the wheels on mine are 18" and there's only goodyear wrangler that make a tyre in my size at £194 each.

It rather depends on how you use your 4x4.If it is used as a car/tow vehicle just for the caravan and on the occasional muddy site then a decent branded road tyre would be sufficient and considerably cheaper.Makes such as Avon/Pirelli(although they also make an AT tyre they do seem to be be more road orientated).If you are using the 4x4 for a mix of road and off road where you need regular off road grip then I would recommend BF Goodrich AT,excellent grip and a wear rate that justifies their extra price,General Grabbers are a decent cheaper option but you won't get anything like the same mileage.If you do a lot of off road and little on road then you need a more specialized mud tyre.At this point it is worth investing in a second set of wheels as "off road" tyres tend to be knobbly harsh treads that drum noisily and wear quickly on the road.
At the end of the day the best tyre will be the one that suits your needs and wallet.

Yes, we will almost wholly be on a highway apart from when on site. We did look at the AT2s, thanks Andrew, and I think they are too off road for our needs.

However, that steer has led us to be comparing Toyo open country A/T and General Grabber HTS, and we seem to be leaning towards the HTSs.

I have Kumo Road Ventures on my Jeep and they are a great value tyre.

Oops our Sorento is the Titan which has 18" wheels and Goodyears ! Still it has only done 10K miles so tyre change is a while yet!

Better start saving???

We have Pirelli Scorpion AT, excellent on road and gave us excellent grip over the winter when X5s and the like were struggling in the snow due to road biased tyres.

Expensive mind and remember that 4x4s are recommended to have both tyres on an axle changed at the same time!
