hi all

I am thinking of getting a new van and have sold off my 20 year old sprite. Now I just need to match a new one to my car. I have a 1.6 Tdi bluemotion VW passat. My HO would like a van with fixed bunks on the side and a back bedroom for the kids.

Is a sprite major 6 just too big for this car? Anyone have any thoughts as the what tow car.com puts the ratio at 93% - though the MTPLM looks low compared to the manufacturers 1433kg.

Does anyone know of other vans with this layout - three fixed bunks at the back on the side wall as oppose to across the back? Or do I need just go for a smaller van like the ranger 500/5 or ranger 540/6 as this looks a little lighter than the major.

ps changing tow car is not an option as its a company car. So could change in two years. Failing that I could buy the OH a LR disco!

A quick look online suggests the MTPLM for the Sprite is about right; the current VW passat brochure suggests that the kerbweight, including driver, for a 1,6Tdi bluemotion saloon is 1495 and 1530kg for the estate.

So on the basis that 85% is 1271 and 90% is 1345kg I would suggest that you want a van with MTPLM of about 1300kg so a Ranger 540/6 or 500/5 is probably OK (though I haven't checked recent specs). You could probably have a Lunar Zenith 6 or an Explore 495 as well

Maximum towing weight appears to be 1400kg.. You would need to get the caravan plated at that losing 33kg of carrying capacity.

+1 - also, the question of power/weight ratio. I know the VAG TDi engines are good, but don't think the 1.6 would have the necessary oomph for hills etc.
