off to the new caravan club site at barnard castle at the weekend, but their recommended directions want to send me down the A1 (from newcastle) to scotch corner and along A66, coming into barnard castle from the south.

i know i can come off the A1 onto the A688 at bowburn straight to barnard castle, which is much shorter, but is this route ok while towing? its been donkeys years since i have been through barnard castle, but from what i remember there was a few tight turns.

any advice would be appreciated.

simon.

Hi there is very narrow bridge over the River Tees as you go from the site into Barnard Castle so they must be making sure you avoid it.
PS We are off there Friday too.

The bridge is narrow but there are traffic lights with one way traffic, so enough room to swing round. Barnard Castle itself can be difficult, the road through is narrow with a steep hill and there are some places where you really would not want to meet a large van coming the other way. Also there are numerous roundabouts on the way. However it is a pretty route. If you use an oldish sat nav you will have fun as you come past West Aukland. There is a new bypass now which only shows up on the most recent sat navs.

I nearly always come down the A1 to Scotch Corner even when not towing. While the distance is greater, you can maintain a steady speed and get there in the same time, and probably use less petrol. I would suggest this to be the most sensible route.

thanks freeatlast.

that makes sense, i would prefer a steady route rather than stop/start, and i did have doubts anyway.

scotch corner it is then.

tamgyp, if i see your van, car, dog, i will say hello.

thanks to both of you for your replies.

simon.

Hi Simon
We go same way as Freeatlast describes - if I remember correctly there is an earlier turning for Barnard Castle which would also take you into the town so make sure you take the B6277 as the club directions say.

Hope to see you at the weekend and by the way there is another identical dog!

Janice

Wow, good luck to you at the new site.  We passed it a couple of weeks ago and it still looked very much unfinished with lots of power cables sticking up out of the ground etc.  Hope it is all finished and looking good.
