I'd take your time and read one of the Land Rover forums.
If you enjoy messing about with vehicles it's an ideal choice - but they are generally an enthusiast's project rather than a buy it and drive it vehicle.
I tow a twin axel with a 2006 Discovery HE and wouldn't now tow with anything else.
The only problem I had with earlier Discoverys was leaking sun rooves. That's why I went for the HE with no sun roof rather than the HSE.
One of the good things about them is that you can raise the suspension before you hitch up when you are on uneven ground and there is no chance of the jockey wheel getting stuck under the A Frame.

Im on my third disco three and down at le pin parasol as i write this, and it was a superb drive down here myself and a mate of mine have come down here in two disco threes with two twin axle baileys.Mine has returned 27mpg my mates has 17 mpg but he has four bikes on the roof and its a killer for the diesel.my discos a 2007 his is an 2005 his has done 100,000 miles no issues at all and mines 50,000 miles again no issues.my advice is get a manual not to many gadgets and no sunroof.and keep some blanking plugs for egr valves because they mess up and go into limp mode. And as with all landrovers good rac/aa/greenflag ha ha
Lots to watch out for, but if you know them its fine. Get yourself over to the Discovery 3 Club www.disco3club.co.uk We do alot of off roading and also many of us gather for camping weekends. To be honest, there is not much we dont know about them colelctively

Dont believe those magazines, actually get on some LR3/Discovery 3 forums and find out from the many 'real' people.
With the greatest of respect, will they not be slightly biased towards them?
Whereas an independent survey/test will not. Its abit like asking a man-u fan what he thinks of man-u
Just returned from New Forest CC site and Disco 3 and 4's even outnumbered the Sorento, got overtaken on the way home by a couple of Discos and a few range Rovers-all still going!!
I can only say after 5 years towing with a Disco3 is that if I bent it I would buy a new even better Disco4 tomorrow.[except you cant as they are so in demand]
