Looking at purchasing a Discovery TDV6 SE 2.7 Diesel - 55 Reg

What sort of MPG are you getting whilst Towing and Solo.

I'm towing a Coachman Pastiche 535/4 reviews suggest the 2.7 is a little sluggish.

Your thoughts please.

Disco3 Is the best for towing IMHO and minimal towing experience!!!.

However on a twin axle with heavy foot you'll soon be around 18/19mpg... the the 'permagrin is worth the lack of MPG!!!

Just checked my spreadsheets latest computation.

Towing 18,600 miles, the on board computer based figure for the towing element is 20.58 mpg.
Note this is a 1900kg van, and the vehicle is a 2007MY Automatic. Also note this is from the vehicles on board computer; where its been practical to check against true MPG it has always been optimistic but not consistent in the level of its optimism. The real value I suspect is just the wrong side of 20 over all the towing its done. Some days with free flowing roads, significant journeys and a favourable headwind its actually indicating 23 mpg., and once 24. Cross the likes of Basingstoke with its many roundabouts and the readout is sick 17.5 if the journey length is not enough to recover.

Solo again its all over the place reflecting how free running conditions are, for example yesterday with the wind in the right direction it was 34 running to Chichester some 25 miles away, and 31 running back into the wind. Drive 12 miles in urban conditions it can be 23 or 24. Your returns wholly depend on the running conditions and how you drive.
I found the manual is about 10% better in the urban duty but a good bit less on free-flowing roads.

Is it underpowered?; well drive the Disco4 with its 34% higher torque, 3 litre engine and yes relatively it is. However I feel the 2.7 litres 190bhp and torque is adequate for such a vehicle; when I want to drive exhilaratingly I borrow the wife's GTI. If I was mad enough to take the depreciation head on and buy new again it would be the 3 litre, but then again the extra "go" its not needed just liked.

One Possibility you could get the 2.7 rechipped or mapped to get some extra ompf but your mpg may well suffer , in my job we use the 2.7 for towing display units around we do not find the power/weight ratio to much of a problem just keep plodding along and we get there in COMFORT better than the 2.4 Defenders that we also use.(damnned Uncomfortable)
