We would like to advise all caravaners to torque up their caravan wheel nuts every time they go out, as ours came off when we was on a very busy road, also check when they collect a caravan after a service and thirty miles after they pick up brand new vans.

We have looked into this and have found out caravan wheels are not balanced as new from manufacturer so causes vibration to the wheels, which contributes to the loosening of the wheels nuts

This is a very serious fault with caravans, we have been caravaning for about eighteen years and had three brand new caravans and four second hand but have NEVER been informed about re-torqueing wheel nuts.

Although this is stated in the handbooks, we was never aware of this as you only look in the handbook when you are specific to what you need to  know, we assumed they were, like car wheels, and who checks car wheels for every journey.

This happened to me last year after the van was serviced and wheel nuts not tightened properly. It was my first year of towing and made me very nervous for quite some time afterwards. I bought a torque wrench and check them before every trip, they have never loosened but the check gives me peace of mind.
I past a caravan on the A1 a few weeks ago where the owner was walking back to his van carrying his wheel.
I am sure that anyone who has experienced this would never make another journey without checking and a torque wrench is far cheaper than the repair bill.

hi welcome to the site . .. best advice you could have been given is to read the handbook from cover to cover. all wheels on caravans cars trucks should be retorqued after a wheel as been fitted. as with all things they get left  out. do we always check oil, water air in tyres every trip /week . its possibly in the handbook. truck drivers usually have to sign a check sheet every day or the ministry can and do give someone grief. . good job it apears you werent hurt. hope its a warning to others . keep a CHECK. your and others lives are at risk. cheers alan.

The first thing I bought when we began caravanning was some thread locking compound. Use it on the wheel bolts and I've never had any of them work loose.

I still check them every journey - better safe than sorry.

I have every sympathy. This happened to us with our brand new van a couple of weeks ago. I hope no one was hurt and the damage to your caravan wasn't too bad.

Hi and thanks for your replies, no-one was hurt but it was very frightening and the damage is £1700,  we was told that we was lucky as the wheel did'nt go through the floor, but it did overtake the car and could have killed someone !

Food for thought and a good case for obtaining those indicators that fit on the bolts like those fitted to lorries & trucks - gonna have a look-out for some

Just seen these on the bay:-

I use some touch up paint, and put a small dot on the outside of the wheel nut or locking nut. Easy to check every time I'm ready to go on the move.

Good point OP. I always check mine before every trip - and the air pressure as well. Whilst waiting for the wife to be ready I fill in the time checking the car wheels . Oddly I never check the car wheels when I am not towing, other than for pressure!!!

I use one of these.....

A year or so back it came top in some caravan magazine test

I've repaired and maintained my cars and caravans for 40 years.

Once I've tightened the wheelnuts I never check them again until the next service. I've never had a problem. I tow the caravan about 4,000 miles per annum.

Nowadays because of warranty issues I do have the caravan serviced by a dealer. Fortunately the wheel nuts do have the plastic indicators fitted so I do regularly whip the wheel trims off to check the nuts are still aligned (only takes a second)

There have been many threads about torquing wheelnuts over the years and the consensus (in my opinion) has been to check only if it's been serviced by sonmebody else. Constantly checking the torque can lead to overtightening
