hi, just wanting to know if anyone has any experience towing with a car same as this one i have just bought, 1999 a6 2.5tdi quattro.
would like to know what sort of economy i should expect normal driving and also when towing a caravan etc.

only have it less than a week but seems great car so far.
i know age is always a worry but to be honest i sold my 2006 xtrail and feel like i have moved up intead of down in a lot of ways.
xtrail was ok but was dissapointed with the plastic every where and little creaks etc when on back roads, was very sore on fuel compared to book figures, only got 30mpg from 2.2turbo diesel. book says around 37 combined.
may offend some people but since renault joined with nissan in projects the build quality has suffered, would say the terrano would still be a better buy than xtrail.
anyway if anyone can give some good / bad points or things to consider about the a6 please do so.
thanks

I used to have an Audi A4 2.5TDi Quattro the same age as yours. I never towed with it so I cannot completely answer your question........

Solo, to and from work I was only getting high twenties / low thirties, but on a run things improved dramatically and I could get 47 miles/gallon if I drove at 70ish but if I drove at about 55 mile/hour I could get 55 miles/gallon.

Not bad for a 2.5 litre 4x4! Especially as I used to be a bit of a boy racer ( now reformed you will be pleased to hear! )

cheers for the replies guys, at the minute doing my work run which is 6 miles each way but has actually got 4 crossroads on rural roads that i have to stop at, is leaving it an un-economical run for sure and i am reading 30.8 on the dash display, i did a run 12 miles of straight forward road and no junctions which brought the average up to 35.6.
really am pleased with it so far.
i have had no trailer on yet so am wondering just how far the economy drops
we have a particular caravan site we go to which is all grass and my previous car to the xtrail had a bit of trouble pulling the van when ground wet and turned up at busy times on site.
hoping i will sail along now,
thanks again.

Our 130hp (VAG engine'd) TDi Galaxy does about 35-40mpg solo, & drops to between 22-25mpg towing our 1500kg van'.

We also have an old 130hp TDCi Mondeo, that does 45-55mpg, but only drops to 30-33mpg towing the same caravan.

Driven sensibly your Quattro should be good, but will be one hell of a tow-car.

I have a 2001 A6 2.5 tdi Allroad/Quattro and it tows superbly. Plenty of power, the self levelling suspension is a bonus as well. We did nearly 3 weeks around France this year and averaged about 22mpg with the caravan on, 5 passengers, a roofbox and a full load. Not bad for a 10 year old V6 diesel engine!

Your car will tow just about anything, solo you should get around 40 plus towing around 28, if you get it chipped you will see mid 30s towing

Remember change the oil religiously every 10,000

the car has a bit of a story, i work in a small machine workshop that reconditions engine parts and also supplies some engine parts, gaskets, bearings etc.
anyway we got a phone call from a guy that was working on this car and it had broke the timing belt so he was pricing the job to fix it.
the owner thought it was too expensive so was going to break the car. i asked how much for it as it sat,
bought it for £450, had to remove heads and check valves etc, they were all ok but skimmed the heads, ground in valves and fitted new seals,(crank and cams).
also fitted full timing belt kit(genuine audi), tensioners, water pump, heater plugs, new battery, oil, filters front discs and pads and also an air flow meter.
also got help from old mechanic pal who done work cheap for me as i helped.
car was bought, completely fixed and fully serviced is standing me £1350 (previous owner had fitted new injector pump 14 months ago too)
so even if a bit hard on fuel i will live with it. just hope it is not too bad. i had a 1.9tdi 115 hp a6 before and it easily averaged 48-52mpg
from what everyone has said here it will be ok.

it seems that 6th gear is not economical under 60mph so am not using it much on short runs, it will take a while to get best results,
thanks everyone
