Hi Everyone  I need to change a tyre as I had a puncture this holiday and I have heard the stories about Matador tyres which are fitted to my van. The puncture caused slight damage to the wheel arch and have just checked the other side and this tyre has also been rubbing, not a lot so I suspect its when the suspension bounces over uneven roads. However the tyre size is 175R14C so this is a commecial tyres (6/8ply) but it also says 175/75 R 14 99/98 R, I think this means 175 mm tyre width, 75, tyre height as a percentage of the width of tread, R radial ,14 inch wheels, 99 loading (775 kilos) and R speed rating (106mph?). The bit that worries me is the aspect ratio (75%) as the tyre has been rubbing whereas my service handbook says the tyre should be 175/65 R14 this would be a smaller tyre and so give more clearance but is this ok or have I got this completely wrong? I have to confess that untill this happened I just checked the tread and pressure each time we used the van but not if it was even the correct tyre. Any recommendations for replacement tyres and costs in the Derby area gratefully received.

hi there you could try a 175 64 14 they make this in a commercial tyre or for a slightly narrowwer tyre you could also get the 1657014 these are again avialable in commercial but please state you need commercial as these are very popular car tyre sizes and in my experience as a tyre dealer manty dealers fit the normal ones cos there cheaper!!!

does your handbook list a load rating for the tyres it should be fitted with, how old is the caravan if it wasnt new to you it may be that its had tyres changed before and had differant size tyres fitted. a 175r14 has an aspect ratio of 80% any tyre that doesnt have an aspect ratio marked eg 155r13.185r14 etc  is gererally a 80% aspect ratio. the reason yours say 175r14 but also says 175/75r14 is because the 5% only makes a few mm differance the tyre can cover 2 fitment sizes

if your handbook says 175/65 14 id tend to go with that if the ones on there are rubbing

Stick with the size the manufacturer states 175/65R 14, change both tyres, obviously. If the caravan is not too heavy, car tyres will be ok. What is the loaded weight of caravan?

Hi all

Thanks for the replies

In answer to your questions its a Fleetwood Meridien 560 6L 2007 and I bought it last year. The mro is 1200kgs and the mtplm is 1460kgs hence the load rating of 99/98 (775/750kgs)

The load rating is not upto the job. They should at least have 10% more loading capacity than the mtplm. 1460kg + 10% = 1606kg. Your tyres go upto 1550kg. I would be looking at a Load Index of 101 or more to be on the safe side.
