I had the same problem. I solved it with a quick trip down to the surplus store. A breaking parachute was purchased (ex Concorde but thoroughly serviceable) and secured to the back of the caravan via rawl bolts. I then used my diy skills to wire a detonator into the deployment device, the detonator cable was fed through a carefully routed piece of left over hosepipe which was then brought into the towcar via an open rear window.

At the first sign of a sway or for the more technically minded a snake, we fire the chute using one of those windy up things with the red button on it. Once deployed the parachute snaps the outfit back into line almost instantly.

 There are a few minor drawbacks to this system.

1 MPG tends to drop  due to the drag

2 if wearing false teeth they tend to chip the windscreen as they continue forward at 70mph as the car decelerates to 3 mph in 2 micro seconds

3 There could be issues if the vehicle behind is close
