I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. In the boot area it has 12v POWER outlets.

My question is: If I have a leisure battery in teh boot, connected by lighter socket, does this enhance my car power? i.e. If I am connected via my secondary electrics to my van. Does it give the car output power greater endurance?

OR would it be better to connect this battery in parrellel? Or any other suggestions?

Thanks

in theory, yes you would increase endurance, but there is more to this...

you need to stop the leisure battery from being charged from the car circuit....i.e. it will probably want to draw a current to remain equal to the car battery...therfore it will drain both batteries equally.

also is the wiring up to the job. i seem to recall the flex/wiring will only handle about 5 amps at the usual voltages....so i doubt it woudl be safe just to plug in there.

also if you run the car, can the alternator cope...usually in this situation a split charge circuit is put in to cope with two batteries.

i would hook it into the van direct...but again, look at how its going to split the load.

Thanks. I certainly take your first point.

The power outlets are more than 5 amp, I think 15/20. I HAVE charged the battery this way for tent camping, with no obvious issues. Usually unplugging the battery from the car when at rest. Never had any poor starting etc. BUT I am mindful of your point.

I think I agree it woudl be safer to simply put it with the other in the van. This is by connecting like to like isn't it? i.e. + to + and - to -.

Thanks again
