Hello, I'm going to be getting a caravan next year hopefully, but was having a few worries if my 520i 2000 plate would be up to towing a small 2 birth caravan, anyone have any experience with a 520i petrol and towing?
Depends on the weight of the caravan, I have to keep trying to explain to my missus a smaller van is not always a lighter van.
You can get HUGE monster caravans that are 2 berth.
Also ignore unladen weights, Useless when working out your towing limits.
You want to know the caravans maximum laden weight, Looks like your car can tow 1500kg BUT... Your cars kerbweight maybe less than that so not recommended to tow that figure, Although legal.
You dont really want to tow anything heavier than 1250kg.
Plus the fact that a 2ltr 5 series BMW wouldn't pull you out of bed solo!! SORRY! That's according to a friend of mine who had one for a short period before getting rid of it as soon as he could!
The car will pull a caravan as well as any other similar size 2 litre petrol. Certainly the car will be ok for a small 2 berth caravan which is all the op wanted to know.
Your car unladen is 1570kg. 85% of this sticking to the guidelines is 1334kg. This well within bmw's stated max towing limit of 1500kg. It is 170bhp. All of this means it is more than capable of towing any normal 2 berth caravan. Especially by the time you load your vehicle.
Your rear wheel drive may be a disadvantage in a damp field but I am not convinced of this as you will have the weight of the towbar on the rear wheels.
It is the rear wheel drive that we had problems with and we were towing a FC not a caravan, but as it was a Pathfinder it weighed about the same as a small caravan around 1000kg laden.
We had no problems on the road at all but campsites where you had to drive onto grass to park your unit were a nightmare and we always worried that we would get on and then not get off again if it rained! This limited us to hardstanding only.
Hubby loved the car but it had to go for the reason stated above and also because we went back to having two dogs and needed an estate to fit them in.
Rear wheel drive is in fact an ADVANTAGE when towing and needing traction on wet grass.
Putting the weight of a trailer on the back of a FWD car causes a slight lifting of the weight off the front driving wheels, thus causing the problem of spinning wheels on wet grass!
It was not an advantage to us and we nearly got thrown off a site when our car got stuck!!! Having said that we were not the only ones getting stuck that day and it might have been due to the fact that we were a FC in a sea of caravans. That particular site is known for being a bit snobby.
Seriously it has casued us problems on grass pitches. (we could not get off the drive in snow either but were not trying to tow then) and we have also worried any a time when pitched on a grass slope, just in case the rains did come.
We only got the new car this week so this is a recent thing.
As Supatramp has stated, RWD will be an advantage when hitched to a `van (compared to FWD).
If you plough up a field with a RWD car and van combo, you sure as hell won`t get out with FWD. Wet grass - 4WD, then RWD, with FWD bottom of the pile.
I've had a BMW 500 series for about 10 years and I pulled an Abbey Stafford for a couple of years without any problems. I now pull a Pennine Fiesta and don't feel it is even there.

I've just got rid of my 520i sport because 1)outfit match was 96%, organisations recommend not greater than 85%,2)because the sport sits very low and I had a detachable tow bar the electric socket on the car was catching the speed bumps causing damage. Also many of the above reasons re grassy pitch difficulties, now got Kia Sorento.
I spoke to my husband tonight the main driver of our BMW and he stood by the fact that his 540 was great at towing on the road but a nightmare when trying to park our FC on wet grass. as a mechanic/mot inspector/garage owner he really does know his cars and we have experienced towing oursleves with the BMW 5 series for tge last year so really do know what we are talking about. Hubby really reallt loved his BMW but it caused so many problems parking our FC on grass pitches so it just had to go and go it did last week !
