Hiya, does anyone have any opinions on Nissan X trails? I'm going to look at one this weekend. We need a decent sized boot for the dogs. This one sounds good and reportedly does 39 MPG????  It's between this and a Hyundai Santa fe

Thanks in advance

We had one for 6 years. Towed really well. One of the best cars we ever had.

We got rid of it because of turbo problems otherwise we would possibly still have it now. Ours was a 53 reg. I'm not sure about mpg but 39 doesn't sound unreasonable to me.

Hi we've (well, the OH) had two, for 3 or 4 years each, and really liked them. Always happy with the build and never had any reliability issues. Ours were both petrol autos though, so poss not quite the same as what you're looking at.

I had one for three years and really liked it, very car like to drive. Are you thinking of new or secondhand? I think we did manage 40mpg on one trip but I think it a little unrealistic to expect that all the time and if you tow it will drop to about 25mpg, at least that was my experience. The new engines may be more economic.

I have 54 plate 2.2 dci X-Trail and find it very good both solo and towing, approx 36+ about town solo  42+ on a run solo, I would estimate about 25 to 28 ish towing depending on terrain, I also have had the 2.4 petrol Santa Fe some years ago and although it drove ok solo I never enjoyed towing with it, hope you find what you want good luck.

Trouble is the ground clearance doesn't compete with the likes of the X Trails, CRVs etc.

I repeat a post I put up a few weeks ago...
I have been running XTrails now for nearly 8 years. My first was a 2.0 petrol auto that was fine for towing a Conway Crusader but would have been no good for a caravan. My 2nd was a 2005 2.2 deisel turbo that had its intercooler changed under warranty at 2 years and 24k. Otherwise there were no problems with it. Changed that in 2007 for a 2.2 deisel Aventura because such good deals were available prior to the introduction of the later model. I got over £7000 off list at a motor supermarket with an acceptable trade in allowance. It is now over 3 years old and to date no problems. Tows extremely well - we towed Bailey Bordeaux at about 87% and now towing a Pegasus at around 92% which isn't ideal from a stats perspective but in practice always feels secure. Get 40 mpg solo on long run keeping to 70-75 on clock. 33-35 routine commuting and 25-27 towing as long as you don't push it over 60-65 on the clock. The speedo does read 8-10% fast. Overall I love the vehicle. When the time does come to change I'm not sure what I will get. The new XTrails have not proved as popular, probably due to the fact that there is very little discounting of them. I think many owners of Xtrails are keeping them because they are so good and the cost of change is so high. This is why you're having difficulty finding one. I do like the look of the new Kia Sorrento but the top of the range price of £28/29k is a bit steep.

How big are your dogs, I ask as we did'nt take to the Xtrail becase we found it a bit cramped especially with the dog, we already had aTerrano for work so decided to get another for best (O/H does not like cement dust on black dress etc she's very picky) and towing so if economy is not a major factor I would plumb for the larger vehicle
