Following my previous enquiries about the diesel CRV. How about the 2.0l petrol version as a towing vehicle? I know the early Mk 1 had a low towing capacity but I'm thinking of 05/06 vintage Mk2. Would be grateful for any opinions (I know they're a bit thirsty!)
Cheers

They tow 1500kg the same as the MK1 from what i can see, Except auto's which have a lower towing limit 1200kg?

Just watch the cars unladen weight, Some of the cheaper more basic models may not weigh 1500kg so possible to tow over 100%.

Later models seem to be a bit better on fuel, On paper anyway, In real life though?

For a caravan 1200/1300kg it will be fine.

I had a 2003 Honda Stream (same 2 litre petrol engine as the CRV) and it was fine - we only changed the car because, as an auto, it had a stupidly low towing weight (1200 kg) whereas the manual has 1500kg. It was very reliable (Honda claim they have built 15 million of those VTEC engines and not had a SINGLE failure!!) but it wasn't very economical - 28mpg solo so towing will be around 20mpg max, I would imagine.

When it comes down to it, it doesn't matter about the manufacturer IMO - look at the basic figures; bhp, torque, vehicle weights etc.

As many will tell you, petrol is not as good for towing simply because they have less torque than the equivalent diesel - only ever towed with a diesel myself so can't confirm that but it sounds reasonable.

A work colleague has a petrol CRV, done over 100K, still on original battery and just had a new exhaust!

He does not tow but it certainly has plenty of power.

Many thanks for the replies. Further question - I was looking at an '04 model yesterday and in the hand book is it said max hitch load was only 50 kg. I know it was 50kg on the old M1i CRV but I thought the Mk2 was 100kg max. Anyone know anything about this?
Cheers

We have a 2003 model and the handbook says the same. I believe the change to 100kg was implemented on the face lift model which was launched in 2005.
