you will never get an economical car at high speeds, no matter how it is powered.
Like I said in a previous post, a HDI or similar engine is the most efficiant up to 1800RPM, efficiency drops after this.
also as scotty said "you canny change the laws of physics" doubleing speed quadruples the drag, thgereby increasing the power required to maintain the said speed,
now, if we could all drive in a vacuum....
