Hi All,
Well after just wasting another £600 on the heap of VW junk we purchased last year I have now lost all faith in it,
Yeah its great on diesel and when towing is fantastic, however we are both sick of it being in the garage for repairs (total £2100) in 6 months! (spent a total of 31 days in garage now)
Anyway rant over, we have decided to take the loss (massive) and get shut of it.
This afternoon we are going to look at a Hiace Regius, 1999, 3.0td, I know the fuel economy won't be great but the money the sharan has cost us we could be running a hummer and be cheaper!
I know Tigermouse loves her Granvia (similar thing) I just wondered if anyone else has one of these and what they are like to tow with?
I have thought about a bongo but I've heard of head gasket poblems etc with them, and have always hankered after a toyota,
Having anything smaller than a 6 seater is impossible as got 4 kids and 3 dogs before anyone says "get a mondeo"
Have looked at the Previa also but apparantly there have been lots of issues with the D4D engines.
Your responses are greatly appreciated.
Gaz

You're right, I do love it! Ok, the fuel economy isn't great with today's prices, but obviously better on a long run than just driving around town, and for me the comfort factor, space, and easy driving balances that out. I believe that the Regius is a bit smaller in width than the Granvia though not by much - whether this would make any difference to you I don't know. As for towing, I've yet to tow with mine, but my ex said it was great, hardly knew the caravan was on the back and it coped easily with everything.

If you are looking at any vehicle of this age then its pot luck. Just because your Sharan has been a disaster it don't mean a different make will be any better. You could equally buy another Sharan/Galaxy/Alambra & it could be as good as gold.

If you have spent that much on your existing car it is presumably now ok(what have you had fixed exactly?)so keeping it could be a cheaper, better bet than buying summat else & risking a heap of trouble again. Most speak well of the car you have already.

Hi both and thanks for the responses,
Well we had a test drive and both really love it, it has way more space than the Sharan even with the seats up I reckon the dogs would get in the boot.

Tentz, well the cars injectors have just failed which was the latest large garage bill, Well we have had heaps go on it, some silly niggly faults e.g. drivers door not closing, bonnet latch broke, and then bigger things like the injectors, wiper motor, then wiper metal arm thing it goes into etc etc. The clutch is on its way out (was advised by the mechanic) and I fear the Dual Mass Flywheel will go anytime soon as its done around the 90k mark and I've read lots on the net about them failing at this mileage.
I am so worried we just keep piling money into the car we have now lost a lot of faith in, we are constantly wondering what else is going to go wrong.
Having spoken to our Mechanic he has said VW's definitely are not as reliable as they used to be.
Plus if we go ahead with the Regius we get a 2 year warranty thrown in.

Now really unsure what to do, I have started to hate the Sharan so much now,

Oooh Bernie Ban that looks so cool. I am incredibly jealous as I love Bongo's, think they look great in white (the toyota is white over silver!)

We are going to look at a bongo tomorrow too, although OH is now in love with the Toyota,
I really am not sure to do, just completely fed up with the VW,

We have had a bongo for 3 years and it's never missed a peep.  Took us to the South of France twice as well as loads of other long trips and will be going to France this year. Re the gasket probs - you will always hear about the problems for any make of vehicle - people are not so quick to relate the success stories.  No problems with gasket on ours or any bongo's that I've personally came across.  All that said, much as I love our bongo once it dies I will go for the granvia - 6 inches wider and no middle consol means a tad more room.

OOh thanks for that Feeblecat,
Well, we we're going to look at a bongo but we found on the internet at a more local to us garage a Hyundai Trajet Diesel, auto. We have been to look at and it suits our needs, so have decided to go for that.
Purely and simply, because thats what we had before the sharan and was a brilliant car,
I had some ridiculous insurance quotes for the Granvia and Bongo's and our insurance company wanted £1600 extra if we we're to stay with them.,

The Hyundai we have purchased comes with low mileage, a warranty and 6 months tax and 12 months MOT so lets hope its as reliable as our last Hyundai,
That wasn't what we originally set out to look for but we are both pleased, and it should be a bit better on fuel then the Granvia,

I do hope one day that we will get a Granvia/Regius or a Bongo, but for now we have put our sensible heads on and gone for a more main stream car.
Sensible Silver :(   (would have preferred a red one!)

Thanks again for the responses, we certainly won't be purchasing a VW ever again! I won't be sad to see it go.

Glad you've managed to get sorted gaz.

On the subject of Granvia insurance - not that it applies now but thought it might be worth mentioning - it would be worth trying Lifesure, they specialise in Jap imports and for my OH it was way cheaper with them than anyone else for a really good policy.

Hells bells - who was quoting that ridiculous price?  We have our bongo insured fully comp and european breadown for under £300 (I think it is nearer £270!) with the C&CC!!

Hi Feeblecat,
The £1600 was with budget, Cheapest I got a quote for was £960 with a specialist broker (mark richard insurance), They said it was because we are both under 30! (despite the fact we have 7 years no claims each on both on our policies and Nedra is a bus driver!) Although we do have to insure it for business use as I am a foster carer. Not sure if that made a difference.

Could it be worth getting quotes from the C&CC (not just for bongo etc) to see what the price would be?   That's one of the reasons we joined the club ( we do also use their campsites) because you can get good discounts for insurance etc.  We also have our building and contents insurance with them.

I have had it book marked on my smartphone since you put up the link, I have regular reads when ~I am waiting in the car on the school run,
It really is fantastic the adventures you've got up to since passing your driving test and the photos of places you've been to always give me a nice warm feeling about having some holidays.
I also like reading the bits about what beaches/places you have taken your dogs too as with our 3 dogs we always look for places dog friendly when we are away.

I will look forward to reading about your adventures this year when you hit the road again.
