i have just bought myself an erde 122 trailer my question is do i need or is it adviseable to fit a breakaway cable, also whe coupling up i thought the handle on the erde would pull right up then you put hitch over ball then push handle down to lock, but to me this does not seem to be the case as the handle on the hitch does not really seen to come up very far, how it appers to me is you push the coupling down on the ball and it snaps in place then to realease pull trigger and lif handle. Am i doing this correct. cheers Lee
you need a chain or cable for an unbraked trailer that will keep the trailer attached to car.as to handle on my erde you pull the small trigger to lift the main handle set on towbar and release.
Like the others have said, you don't need a break away cable and you wouldn't be able to fit one either because what the break away cable does is pulls the draw bar which is then linked to the brake shoes and applies the brakes if the trailer becomes detached from the towing vehicle whilst in transit. As yours is not a braked trailer you don't need one, you just need a device like a chain etc. just in case the trailer becomes detached whilst towing.
I don't think you really meant a breakaway cable which puts the trailer brakes on if it breaks away from the tow vehicle. The ex factory fitting on the 122 is just an emergency small chain.
Your handle is correct. mine snaps shut without any lever to pull/push.
cheers for all the replies there is a piece of chain on the trailer up by the coupling and as someone said some holes on the towbar so all i really need is some sort of clip from the chain to the holes then, just incase and i hope to god it never does come dettatched. i can remember some years ago being on an exersice in a landrover when a rather large field gun over took us on it's trailer glad to say wasn't me who lost it

In some european countries this is not leagal and the chain / secondary coupling cable must be attached nearer to the car incase the ball fails.
Most towbars have a fixing point on the main bar.
I recomend that if traveling abroad one end of the chain is realeased from the bolt going through the coupling giving you a longer chain this will reach most points on towbars. Then a suitable carabina or hook is fitted to the chain to reach the recommended point.
