hi PS12 the C5 HDI (high pressure diesel injection) is a diesel engine we average around 35 mpg towing, ours is an 03 model with the self levelling suspension we were advised to buy one with the 2 litre 110 horse power engine because they dont seem to suffer from some of the electrical gremlins that the 2.2 litre model does, also its quite a bit cheaper to service . last november a local car dealer was selling an 05 C5 estate for £4500 it looked in nice condition and it sold in just over a week .i am sure that you will have some great holidays in your 470/4
Well we have the Citroen C5 2.2HDI a 2003 model I have found it a perfect tow car with self leveling suspension & cruise control a boon ,allthough I average 27 mpg when towing my 1360kg van we have pulled all over the EU mountains of switzerland & through to croatia with no problems
Solo we get 40/42 average,A car of this age can be got for around £2000 in very good condition
Hi we have also just bought a Bailey Ranger and before that we had bessacar cameo which we towed with a Dihatsu 4 track without any problems infact it was well on top of the job apart from the fact that it tendered to bounce about a little now we have changed our tow car to a Nissan X trail which we have found to be perfect plenty of power and the longer wheelbase stops any bouncing about the model we have is the 2.3 diesel sport it pulls the van well and it gives good millage. I hope this will help you best regards idmainian
hi, we have a bailey ranger 510/4 and we have towed that with a 2.0HDI Picasso 5 seater (old shape) but have since changed the ca to a Grand Picasso 2.0HDI VTR+ 7 seater. We do not know that the van is there and we only got a 7 seater for ease of family runs rugby etc. Our old Pic towed well but struggled a little on steepish inclines. good luck with your choice. gary
Thanks guys, yeh agree Big Al big too much for us with what we need. I think we have some ideas now, thanks for all your replies. I'm sure I will talk to many of you again. When we are up and running.
We are not having much luck I'm afraid fancied something like a citroen xsara picasso because of the height but the 2 ltr does not have a very good report on what tow car.com. We don't feel as if we could trust just a 1600 to tow the bailey. Am really confused beginning to think we won't ever get one!!! Any help appreciated.
We are in a similar position, and very fortunate to have a 10k budget, but can't find the car we want in our area. We have decided to go the Skoda 4x4 diesel route. They seem to hold there price well, but people tend to hold on to them. As said i would recommend at least a 1.9 or 2.0l TD to tow your van with. I currently tow with an older 1.8 petrol Zafira & it is heavy on fuel. The hardest thing for me was making the final car choice..Good luck with your hunt..
Why not go for a Mondeo with 7K to spend you will pick up a nice 3year old new shape model. Cheap to run, with good mpg, will pull almost any single axel caravan so you are not limited if you ever change your caravan. plenty of room for all your gear and good looking as well. What more do you need,

Hi guys thanks v much for all your replies. I see one reply suggested we post exaclty what type of car we are searching for and the price range. Well we are looking for something between 6-7k don't really need an estate but not adverse to one either. We had heard the skoda was very good for towing. Any other ideas please now you have an idea of price range? Cheers
Jeff the showgun was brill pulling the van, and solo coming back from cornwall 1\2 a tank at 70 mph(365 miles) may be a little faster..so better than the 2.2 frontie i had solo on the motorway.Pulls well kept cruise control on both ways, and found that i wasnt crippled when i got out of the car, did the trip coming home without a stop, cos i could just keep driving without having a stretch, just short of a full tank pulling but had the kitchen sink as well in the van.
