Just a word of warning for anyone who has a 13 pin plug (or is getting one fitted). It's worth checking whether the fitter is using a 13 core cable, or using the old twin electric cables and squeexing them in. Our towbar fitter did the latter, which has meant the waterproof seal on the back of the socket, is stretched and not watertight; this had allowed water into the back of the soket, causing some shorting across the terminals (the indicator buzzer, whines at the moment even without the van connected).

Anyway I've bought a length of 13 core cable, and new socket, and intend to splice old and new cables together within the boot of the car - however speaking to our local caravan shop when I got the cable I was the fourth person this week having the same issue. Last thing you want when hitching up the van to go away is to find that the electrics are flooded!!!!

Sloppy ain't it? this is just doing on't cheap using a bypass relay & 2 cables botched onto a 13pin socket. Way to go on a modern car is dedicated 13pin loom.

Had a similar problem, but as fitting organisation was member of National Trailer and Towing Association managed toget it rectified free of charge throught the NTTA quality assurance side of things.

Check and see if the organisation that did the poor job for you is a member.

You also need to check the cable has the correct size cores.

There are substandard cables about.

Does this mean the adaptors which are available also allow water in through the seal? They've got two cables going into the rear of the 13 pin plug. Advice would be appreciated.

I'll be in for problems if they're a problem, the cable rubbed though on the road surface last summer & I spent an hour in a lay by on the A30 having to cut through the remaining cores, strip them back & tape them together to get home. The adaptor is now the perfect length but I'll have to replace the length of 13 core if I need to replace the cable to avoid water ingress through the adaptor.

Paul B I am just about to change my twin sockets for a single 13pin on my 08 Sportage.How do you intend to splice them together?
Could I use connecting block and tape it up well in the boot?

The adaptor would probably let in water but not so much a problem because its only out in the open while you are towing. It will dry out because it will be in your boot or wherever when not in use. The socket on the car is permanetly exposed.

If you are using a double adaptor its a good idea to tie it to hitch handle to prevent it dragging on ground.

Connector block would be ideal for connecting 12n/12s cables to a 13core provided it is in boot, out of weather.

Connector block should be in an enclosure. Taping it up is not satisfactory I am afraid. I did mine using a small box with stuffing glands for the cable entry points and it is sealed. With little or no chance of shorting out etc

Could you give the reason why the connector block should be in an enclosure, when so many others on a vehicle wiring harness are just block connecters with no stuffing glands.. maybe I'm missing some thing !

The main thing is that it should be kept dry & it should be not allowed to short on anything. I would have thought binding with tape would be ok provided the block was tucked out of the way. Putting it in a box as stated is not a bad idea tho.
