Thinking of switching back to a 4x4 after 5 happy years with an estate. Previously had a Sorento, but dont like the new one so was looking at the Sante Fe, especially after seeing the positive threads on here..
Always had auto cars (more relaxing blah blah) however, I note the SF has only a 80kg nose weight for the auto (100 for man), my question is whether that would be okay?
Our van is mtplm 1560kg, and I was always led to believe that nose weight should be as near 7% of weight as possible. 80kg is only 5% and I wondered if that would cause instability issues?
Also any feedback on auto v manual for this car.
Cheers.
We have recently taken delivery of a Santa Fe Premium manual ( 2011) so can only comment on this version, it has a high towing limit and kerbweight 1920 kg and as stated 100kg noseweight limit.
The auto version is heavier but has a lower nose weight 80 kg this should be ok if the caravan is loaded correctly and carefully but i always prefer manuals due to autos in the past have always been more expensive and it was you get used to
Hi I tow a Swift Celebration 630 (its a Glossop special)I tow it with a Santa-fe 2009 2.2litre. It towed ok but wasn't good on fuel, but considering you have 1700kg following you it was no wonder .(makes me obey the speed limit's).
After a lot of very carefull reading and forum site banter I eventually purchased a plug in chip system. The system was made and supplied by "Drake Box",you can change its effects on the mapping of the engine from 1 to 9. I run mine at position 4. The difference it makes to the torque is amazing and because it is torque you need for towing the engine is turning over slower and giving you what you need......bonus it does do about 10% plus mpg and better towing.....They cost around £80 delivered to the door take about 20 mins to fit,Or remove if you were silly enough to use one whilst your car is under warranty!!!!!!or it goes in for service....
Iam a time-served Auto Spark and only fitted the unit after a lot of research....It is a well-known fact that modern diesel engines run at no where near their true potential....this unit helps a hell of a lot...I love it
and when you sell the car the unit goes onto E-Bay....WIN WIN
Hi Mister G
Of course you must inform the Insurer. As iam disabled i convinced them that at my age (never see 65 again) that it was totally not about performance,it was about towability ie torque not BHP.
As far as fuel consumption like I said it improves by 10% which is roughly 3.5 mpg.Doesn't sound much but at £1.35 a litre all contributions are very gratefully received.
Hope this answers your questions.

Hi all, I tow with a santa fe premium auto 10 plate. I only have a 1100kg van so don't really know it is there. tows like a dream and my other tow car was a vw touran manual which was also good but I will never go back to manual. Much more relaxing and you can put it into manual if you need to, which I do on step hills up and down to help slow it without using brakes etc. I get 42 mpg on motorway at steady 70mph and 32mpg around town if carefull on accelerating etc. when towing i got 26mpg with 4 bikes on the roof too. MPG improved a lot after 6000 miles too but apparently they need time to run in. My friend has the same car but a manual and he gets an extra 2mpg when towing and his van is 400kgs heavier. I do a lot of queuing in my car so auto is worth the extra cost!
Another question would be what is the nose weight of your caravan when it has gas bottles & battery in?
We have a Pegasus 524 with the optional chest. With 2 gas bottles & a 110 Ah battery, it has nearly 100kg nose weight even though it is only a 1480kg mtplm caravan.
Even though it is not that heavy a caravan, if I only had a 75 or 80kg nose weight limit, we would have to place quite a bit of weight behind the axle, which is not ideal. The 80kg noseweight limit would put me off an auto Santa Fe.
If I was getting a Santa Fe, I would get the 7 seater for the self leveling rear suspension.
We have 2010 Santa Fe (5 seat manual) towing 1500kgs. I aim for 90kgs noseweight. Have no problems with stability towing at legal speeds and I achieve about 29 mpg on mixture of motorway and A roads. Solo have got 47 mpg on longish motorway trip running in, but in mixed driving get around low 40's Overall very pleased with car, its stability, space and load capacity, fuel consumption and performance
The 80kg noseweight limit would put me off an auto Santa Fe.
we have the santa f'e auto V6 petrol 2004.pulls like dream and comfortable with it.stopped checking MPG a while ago.towing it was 17 MPG a 1272 MTPLM bailey 500/5 caravan.not good but there are worse 4X4 petrol users out there.the towbar weight is a max of 92 kgs.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
