More than happy with that taking the Comfort and extras fitted as standard. could get an extra 10mpg from another type of vehicle but extra cost and reduction in trim ???? no thanks.

I wrote this not long after getting the caravan. In the light of more experience, towing down to Carnac and around the UK, the figures are now
Worst - 60 mph into a headwind 28 mpg
Best - following wind at 56 mph ish - 37 mpg
Average - circa 33 mpg.
Consumption greatly affected by route ( climbing involved)/speed/wind strength and direction.
Solo car - best 66 mpg, generally high 50's driven reasonably gently.
Don't know where this rule of thumb 20% reduction while towing came from, more like a 40% reduction! I guess that it depends upon the relative mass of the car and van, and maybe the gearing of the car.
Ford Smax 2L tdci 140bhp. Caravan 1200 max. Similar mpg to other 2L diesel fords. 48 to 50 solo on long journey at 70 ish. Towed the caravan with about 1100 weight (part loaded) from Stoke to Northumberland via M6 and A69 at 55/60 mph. 32 mpg on computer but I worked actual out at about 30mph. Before the caravan I towed a 900max folding camper, same car, to near Paris and back. Computer says 37 mpg actual 36mpg. So I will be budgeting at 30 mpg about 20p per mile (until diesel goes up again) for this caravan.
Newcastle to Benidorm and back 3000 x 20p = £600. + ferry & tolls.
