my car is a 2002 Citroen Xsara Picasso 2.0hdi(90bhp) my caravan is a Bailey Ranger 500/5.
it worked well, I could feel the caravan was there, but pulling away from junctions was just a bit more effort than normal, and hills on the motorway just need a bit of practise/forward planning!
to put it another way, I am not rushing out to change my car after towing it for the first time.
just a word of warning re , chipping and remaps , apparently from next year vehicles with this work done can fail the MOT as it alters the manufacturers emissions.
i was intending getting mine done but going to hang fire a while just to see what really happens
We were going to have this done, bought a box from Diesel Eco Tuning who seem to have disappeared, and nobody can figure out how to fit the box on our Shogun (neighbour nearly wrecked our car trying). Bev+John, where is the info re MOT? and does anyone want to buy a tuning box?
hi ....taken from another forum so still 2nd hand information,,,
Hi All,
I have recently been looking into getting my car remapped. Unfortunately my 2.2 is unable to be remapped via the diagnostic port so cannot go for Bluefin etc.. (wish I could have). It must tuned directly by ECU.
Anyway over the weekend I have seen that MOT testing regulations will be changed from 1st Jan 2012. One of the changes states that ECU reprogramming/chips will result in an MOT fail!!!!!!
On the forums I have been reading people have been asking how will the MOT testers know whether the car has been remapped? General consensus is it will be based on emissions. There have been conflicting info about this though. Some say a remap will produce more CO2 whilst others say that a remap will result in a cleaner burn meaning less CO2? Anybody with any knowledge know for definate about these issues?
I`m now in 2 minds whether to get the car remapped. I know its 18 months away from MOT but may become a hassle having to get the standard map put back on before MOT and then back on after etc.. Not to mention how much it will cost!!
Thought I`d bring it up for people to discuss and if anyone knows anything about emissions before/after remap.
The diesel test will still apply to smoke only, many owners who have a diesel particulate filter DPF fitted to there exhausts have had them removed and they still pass the MOT
A remap does not mean your car will smoke more as that can be leaned out during the mapping

they do at the moment but will they when the MOT alters in 2012 ???
I would suggest that the MOT will only be harder, and if they have expressed an intention to fail these devices, they will certainly find a way to do so.
if its smoke only tested on mots for diesels why did mine fail when the tester probed the exhaust ? i had to take it for a thrash at 4000 rpm to clear the system out , it was fine on the read - out after that.

You should always thrash a diesel before taking it for an MOT and they should always make sure its up to temp before testing.
My 153000 mile Octavia always reads half of what the DVLA says it does
how about cars that have lpg conversions, the co2 emissions will be totally different under lpg than under petrol - i suppose i could always turn the lpg off and just drive it in and have it tested on petrol if there was an issuel, but that makes a mockery of the testing regime!!
