Kevin i have a 1500kg coachman and pull it with a 2ltr 140 bhp S Max no problem 32 mpg whilst towing, Just ordered a 2ltr 140 bhp New Mondeo today to do the same job.
I, have found when we had vans performance cars don't always make the best tow cars ok on there own but not that good with weight on the mondeo diesel titanium takes some beating and also looks good in front of any van and pretty economical to run
There are many factors to take into consideration.
Over the years I have towed with:-
Ford Sierra 1.8 Petrol
Vauxhall Carlton 1.8 Petrol
Ford Granada 2.0 Auto Petrol
Ford Galaxy 4X4 2.8 Auto Petrol
Ford Galaxy 2.8 Auto 204bhp Petrol
Vauxhall Omega 2.5 Auto Petrol
Chrysler Grand Voyager 2.5 Diesel
Jeep Cherokee 2.8 Auto Diesel
and have towed a variety of caravans. The 2 Diesel vehicles have been the best for power and engine flexibility and I would not go back to petrol. The chrysler was the best for motorway cruising but as we are ralliers the Jeep is the best all round vehicle.
We have just bought a 3 litre v6 vw touareg to pull our 2000kg mptml elddis and wow wee it is by far the best tow car I have ever had soooo comfortable and doesn't really use much more fuel than the sedona. We went from Leeds to pickering and trip computer on from start did 23 mpg I am well please with it
I have always gone for big engined cars(petrol)and over the years I have had a few, however the best car I have ever had for towing was a 2.8 Mitsu pajero diesel import, incidentally have had 3 of these. They were fantastic tow trucks.I have an ABI Northwind twin axle and I did,nt know the van was on the back, now I have a 2.6 Omega which is a good tow car but around 92% it's not ideal so I don't tow with it. Returning to UK next year and perhaps I will buy the new model shogun not new I might add
