Ime thinking of buying an astra 1.6i.16v club, and just wondered if it will pull a 2 berth caravan. The van must be a very light one so we can move it around when we return home. What i want to know before i buy the car is will it tow the van easily.

Thanks, Christina

An older lightweight 2 berth will probably weigh less than 900kg all up so ok with that car. A diesel is better for towing tho.

If you want an honest answer the answer is no. Vauxhalls in general don't make very good towers anyway to say the least and that's including Vectra but the Astra is built on the same chassis as the Zafira. I had a Zafira 1.8 petrol engine towing a lightweight 800 kg. caravan and it was absolutely useless especially climbing motorway hills. I initially had a choice of the 1.6 16v or the 1.8 16v and after looking at the specs for both vehicles the 1.6 16v petrol had a very low bhp plus a poor towing capabilty of a 1000 kgs. max. which would limit the personal effects that you need to take with you along with the weight of 2 gas cylinders and a leisure battery. The 1.8 16v had a slightly better bhp but the towing capability was about another 200 kgs.more than the 1.6. Thinking that I had a reasonable towing vehicle I was hugely disappointed. The diesel version would be much better as they produce much more torque at lower revs but if you compare like for like, the Ford Focus outweighs the Vauxhall Astra by far.

Buy a Skoda Octavia 1.9 tdi hatch, all the power you need, and cheap rfl only £120 a year, group 6 insurance, 50 plus mpg solo

can tow up to 1400

you will find loads on the auto trader site, and don't worry about the mileage they are good for 500,000 miles

Do you work for Skoda??? The engine may last, but the rest of the car suffers from wear & tear too!!!

Thank you all for your replies, Ive been thinking of either a focus or astra. So all in all the focus seem the better buy, I will look for a 1.8 focus zetec.

The Focus estate is the better car as it's heavier and has disc brakes all round. The 2.0 ltr. diesel which I tow with is a serious contender with 136 bhp which is equal to a Nissan X-Trail, has a minimum kerbweight of 1429 kgs. a gross vehicle mass of 1995 kgs. and a maximum towable mass for a braked trailer of 1500 kgs. It does around 57 mpg. solo on long motorway runs (at approx. 55-60 mph) and I can get between 30-33 mpg. towing the caravan. The maximum towbar weight is 75 kgs. and has loads of space in the rear for that extra luggage if you need it. These details have been taken from the official Ford Focus brochure so these figures are quite accurate. Apparently they don't manufacture a 1.8 diesel anymore as apparently Ford had some problems with the engine in the past. Apparently Ford still do a C-Max 1.8 diesel but the rear loading capacity is quite small in comparison and it doesn't come with a spare wheel either whereas the standard Focus does. A car well worth considering.

No I don't but unlike the Fords they are bullet proof they are actually the Golf but bigger, why do you think there are so many being used as taxis across the UK

A lot of the taxis are old model ones with Sdi engines, unfortunately they are having dpf issues with the later ones.
Don't get me wrong I would buy an Octavia over a Golf anyday, or a Superb rather than a Passat, but expecting to use one with close to half a million miles on the clock is a bit much!!!
The thing that lets Skodas down for me is relatively low kerb weights, but more importantly as the buyer of year old cars rather than new ones is the lack of standard ESP on lower trim levels.
Since the 08 refresh all Focus models have had standard ESP.

Skoda stopped making the sdi when they brought out the mark 2 in 2004 and the 1.9 tdi does not have a dpf the 2ltr 140 and 170 vrs does, but they can be removed

ESP is on all models except for the classic

All the face lift and new superb models have dpf but it has been placed near the engine so no more dpf worries

The only problem with the old sdi apart from a lack of power was the gearboxes as they kept on disintegrating, on or just after 100,000 miles, skoda told the dealers to fit the boxes off the turbo version and that cured the problem

A good deal of the taxis round by me upto 07 plate are mk 1 models.
To my knowledge a current Octavia SE still does not have ESP standard with all engines.

This is the kind of question where everyone has a different point of view. I've towed with Fords and Vauxhalls. The Fords tow well but fall to bits very quickly. The Vauxhalls also tow OK (we have a 4 berth van weighing 1100kg fully loaded - with 2 adults & 2 teenagers) - reliability has been excellent.

However, many people I know who've had the Focus haven't had the problems we had, so it's pot luck I guess.

Be careful on many modern diesels. They tow like trains, but when they go wrong they are expensive to mend. My current choice for a medium sized towcar would be the Astra 1.9 CDTi - BUT MAKE SURE IT IS THE 120PS 8VALVE - NOT THE 150PS 16VALVE. The 150PS 16v engine suffers a lot of problems. The 120PS 8v engine is more robust and is the one the tuning lads go for because it doesn't fall to bits. For the size of 'van you're considering it would tow it fine.

To my knowledge it was only earlier 16v engines that had issues.  My personal choice would be the 150bhp from 08 onwards to ensure it was an updated one.  The 150hp Astras & Zafiras came with ESP & sport suspension as standard to improve the towing ability.
