The AA has made a mistake with our renewal this year, to cut a long story short they took over £200 at beginning of March without contacting us (in writing or otherwise)and so far haven't given us a refund. The renewal is rather hefty & so far they have refused to reduce it even though they have admitted they made a mistake.

Anyway I've been looking around and came across Auto Aid on Moneysavingexpert. It's a 'pay & claim' policy rather than an all in policy like AA/RAC and works out a lot cheaper. I'm tempted as it's got a Which? bestbuy.

Other option is RAC Arrival from C&CC.

What do you think?

Thanks

I had Auto Aid for a year before I changed car and got AA cover as part of the warranty. I didn't need to claim, so can't comment on the service but I found them very helpful when asking a few questions on the phone. I will definitely look at them again when the AA cover expires.

Do auto aid cover the caravan/trailer breaking down? Standard cover usual only covers the car.

I added the arrival to my RAC cover last year.

No, but it will be recovered with the car as a result of the car breaking down.

hi

have you looked at Gem for breakdown cover?good price you can go with pay and then claim back or they pay direct it covers you if it is your caravan/trailer that  breaks down.the only downside is if your car breaks down while your caravan is on site then it won't recover the van.

Have used Auto Aid for years excellent cover for the money. I have had to use them once whilst towing - gearbox failure on a Pug 406. The system worked very well- caravan and car both recovered and transported, costs paid at the time by me to the recovery company and repayment from Auto Aid was very prompt and without hastle. The cover has not got  all the bells and whistles of the excellent Caravan Club policy for example but it is a fraction of the cost!! For me that was an important part of choosing this particular 'insurance' cover. Check out their policy cover it does compete well with a lot of other companies

I have had Auto aid for about 5 yrs now but never claimed so for £35 per yrs I have saved alot of money by dropping the AA cover, nothing wrong with the AA but just a little bit more expensive, As said by others Auto Aid do cover any trailers and includes relay for both,

Another plus for Britannia Rescue, always had excellent service from them when I have had to call them out.

Consider ADAC (the German equivalent of the AA) if you go abroad - for 80 euros, you get cover in ANY vehicle you or your partner is in (and your caravan on site or on the road), for all of Europe including the UK.

You send them an e-mail to apply, they send you the details in the post and you phone up to pay with a credit card...not as simple as others but their service gets good reviews and it is a nice, all-in-one policy.

When taking out any insurance, some companies have nasty little habit of requiring you to opt out of automatic next yr. renewal with card details you have supplied. All you do is uncheck box but you are informed of this in very small print.

I phoned Green Flag for a quote & because I have 'Driver' in my job title (I'm a TRAIN driver) I cannot have personal cover which would cover me in any car, passenger or driver etc. They were iffy about the age of the vehicles (my car is 14 this year, 65000 miles on the clock & FSH!) and wouldn't have anything to do with recovery for Husbands kit car.

So I've taken out C&CC Arrival with RAC.All-in-one policy, they aren't bothered that I'm a train driver, Kit Car ok & they take you to your campsite if you breakdown at the beginning of your holiday with caravan and will bring you home again if you can't get the car fixed.

Thank you all for your replies. Very helpful & appreciated

Haven't had any claims experience yet, but Autonational offer 'Total Super Service' car & caravan cover for £66 (for 15 months) if you buy online (& less if your car is under 2 years old). Their website says they were voted 'Best Online Breakdown Cover Provider' by Your Money magazine & they had a 'Best Buy' from Which? in 2010.  Details: http://www.autonational.co.uk/autonational/compare_breakdown.jsp
