The advice above is good and I cant add to it except to say as a kid (before c-vans were banned on Sutton Bank, or someone had foolishly ignored the signs) we saw a very frightening occurence of what can happen. We live in Yorkshire and often went that way.

The towing car couldnt make the hill and was slipping backwards, it was three cars in front of us. Dad had to reverse, we were all reversing. It really is a bitch of a hill. The tow car kept putting on his hand break to slow the reversing down but the weight of the c-van was too much to hold on such a steep incline.

He lost it and it slid down about 30 feet before hitting the car behind and jack-knifing to a halt.

Two of the cars ahead of us plus the one he had crashed into stopped to help, so dad just pulled out and overtook. Apparently the rear wheels of the c-van were inches away from the cliff edge.

Havnt been up there for a while, they probably have armco now, but didnt in those days. They were lucky a total disaster didnt happen.

That is why caravans are banned from Sutton Bank. I was about 9 years old, and I will never forget it.

Some 32 years ago i was doing my basic army training at Catterick and learning to drive armoured cars, one particular day our dfriving instructor took us down sutton bank ........... i think its fair to say i needed a change of clothes when we got to the bottom. It's the most horrendous road i have ever been on and since then i have driven on some pretty remote roads, never again lol even without the caravan on the back.

Caravans are banned from Sutton Bank....with very good reason.

Coming down from Durham head forthe A19 through Middlesbrough until you come to the A174 exit and head east. In Marton turn right on to the A172 to Stokesley. Keep on the A172 round Stokesley (avoiding Town Centre) until you come to theB1257 from Stokesley to Helmsley. Head down to Helmsley.

That road takes you into the Market Place (turning left at the Church). As you come into the Market Place it will be on your right. Keep straight on at the junction and that road takes you out of Helmsley on to Kirbymoorside. This is the Scarborough Road. Through Kirbymoorside and after about two miles turn left to Hutton Le Hole.

Hi I know this post is from a while ago but we are looking for advice. We will be travelling to Hutton le Hole from Carlisle and we are thinking it would be easier to come down via Middlesbrough. Obviously we need to avoid Sutton Bank...we have a large twin axle van. Can anyone suggest the best route? The one above sounds feasible? Thanks

I live 7 miles from Sutton Bank. The above route is what I would also suggest. The Stokesley to Helmsley road is it a bit twisty and hilly but shouldn't present any problems. This road passes through Bisdale and your passengers will get some great views. The road is very popular with motorcyclists and is nick-named the "Helmsley TT". Rievaulx Abbey is definitely worth a visit, there is also a small castle at Helmsley
