Giving up motorcaravanning and looking for a small caravan to tow with VW Passat 1.9 TDI. Any experiences of Elddis Wisps?   Need a caravan under 7ft wide to fit our driveway. Any experiences of this caravan appreciated. Many thanks

My uncle had one about ten years ago, they were basic lightweight caravans, quite sturdy made, but without the frills and specification such as ovens and cassette toilets or blown air heating of more modern caavans of today.

I believe his was a 1992 model, with Green decals, and about 12ft bodylength, but im unsure of the bodywidth as to me it looked no narrower than our Avondale at the time.

Perhaps another small slim caravan to consider would be the Lunar Arriva, they are one of the narrowest models manufactured today, and are light enough to be towed by most small family cars, and have a good specification of equipment.

Hi, thanks for info, looked at pix. What tow car do you use, is it neccessary to fit a stabilizer bar?   We are looking for a simple 2 berth, no frills. Would you know if the 300/2 model is shorter in length?

I have a 1991 350/2 and love it too, but mine does have an oven. Mine has a max weight of 750kg. As far as I can work out the 300/350/400 is the internal length in cm so the 300 would be the shorter one.

I fitted a alco stailizer to ours some would say with a small light van there is no need but i like to have it on if only for when the big lorrys come past it never moves.
We tow ours with a Mitsubishi Colt 1.5 di cz2 does a great job and still get about 36m to gallon towing her 60m without. I think harpmaker will be right about length.
Our model as toilet no oven some have oven no toilet, they are well built aswell we paid £850 for ours 2 years ago and have took her all over the country.
All the best

HI
When we bought ours we forgot to look behind front right corner curtains then when at home we found a bit of soft boarding behind there but it was easy to cure by resealing awning rail. Also back right corner near floor leval was starting to get damp due to black plastic rail under number plate being poorly sealed we were luky both jobs were easly done with the help of people on this site.
Take your time to look every where look for dodgy sealed rails on outside of van ,a strong smell of air freshner inside the van could mean they are hideing the smell of a damp caravan. After looking for damp make sure water heater etc. Work ok these can be expencive to replace.
As the caravan got any service record .anouther good place to look on whisp, put your head inside front locker and look up towards bottem of window for signs of damp.If you are into diy its supising what can be repaired if you get the van for a good price.

Good luck hope you find one that as been well looked after for a bargin price.

Hello again, just an update, we bought the Wisp we went to view yesterday. Have spent today putting things in cupboards and sorting out little odds and ends that you get when you buy secondhand. We really appreciate the input we had on this thread. Let's hope the weather holds up for the Summer and we can all have some happy camping

cheers again, John and Wendy

Hi John and Wendy
We've had A Wisp 450CT from new in 1993. Has been a great caravan. WE tow with a 1.8 Avensis.

Due to ill health we did not use it for two seasons and it was in open storage.

When we collected it we discovered cracks in the ABS front panel and I am now rebuilding the whole front wood frame.

Please check the ABS panel for cracks and if you find any I have a great way to repair them. Hope you don't find any.

Enjoy your Wisp

All the best
Jim & Margaret.

I wonder if it's something I have to look forward to. It could be useful to have the information on how to repair the cracks should they develop. Would it be possible to send me the information too.

Hi Kev and Alan
I don't want to hijack this thread so I intend putting all the info on my front end repair on the site later. I took loads of pics.

Briefly
There are lots of plastic repair kits on the market but I gave it some thought. Any welding uses the same filler as the base material and since our base is ABS I got a sheet of 2mm ABS on ebay. Simple research told me that the solvent is acetone so I got a few small bottles of pure acetone locally.

I had some little plastic boxes with lids and fortunately these were not affected by acetone (to test just dip finger in acetone and rub on the plastic - if it does not immediately go sticky then it won't be affected) Using these boxes I cut some small pieces of ABS put them in box with acetone and in a short time you have ABS repair paste.

With my repair I had removed the interior wallboard and rotten wood so I had access to both sides of the front panel. I cut patch pieces and soaked one side in shallow acetone making it very sticky then fitted them over the cracks (large splits actually) from inside.

When the patches were set I made some ABS paste and filled the splits from the outside. Difficult to be very neat as the paste tends to follow gravity. I left the filler slightly below the surface as my intention is to mask the area for the final, neater finish. If you don't have rotten wood then I'm sure that filling the cracks with paste from ouside would still be effective.

When rebuilding the interior wood frame just remember to cut checks for the patches or the wood will not be flat to the front panel.

I hope this is of some help for now and if there are follow up questions I'll start a new thread.

Apologies to OP and mods for going off topic.
Jim
