We are very new to caravanning and have just bought an old Sprite Corvette.
We are off on Monday and will be towing with our Freelander 2. I know that we can easily tow it with our car but I wanted to put in our bikes and various other stuff - awning etc and wondered whether that would make it over weight?
I haven't got a clue what all this talk of nose weight is so really could do with some advice!
Noseweight will mainly be effected by anything you put in the front box ie: gas bottles, spare wheel etc, your car manual should give you the Freelanders max noseweight. In addition the caravan will have an unladen weight and a maximum weight (MTPLM) the difference between these two weights is the maximum you can load into the caravan eg: unladen 890kg, MTPLM 1190kg = 200kg loading. Any heavy items, awning, poles etc should be loaded over the caravan axle between the wheels.
Hope this helps a bit, I'm sure you'll have more replies though.
Good luck and congrats on buying a van, happy holidays!

Thanks for your reply it does make it a bit clearer :) think ours is 150kg? So does that mean we have to try and load it up to that?
I think the 150kg is the max noseweight for your car. You have to go be the lowest noseweight figure for that of the caravan, probably on a plate on the a-frame, the hitch and the car, likely to be 100kg or less. Advice is to try and aim at 5-7% of the caravan MTPLM, near to the 7% if still within the previously mentioned limits.
Basically I think we have to find the maximum permitted weight for the caravan. Take away the weight of the caravan to see how much we can put into it.
Now this is where I am getting stuck, where does this 5 - 7% thing come in? What am I measuring here?
Sorry to be such a pain, but I want to make sure it's safe!
Ok they only weights we can find anywhere on the caravan are on the part you attach to the car (the hitch?) It has the figures 1000kg and 1400kg. Would they be the weights? If only it had come with a handbook
Hi Chickpea, this weight thing's right b*gger, isn't it! We've have a bit of a nightmare with ours this week.
As previous posters have said, the MTPLM is the total loaded weight your caravan can legally be. The best thing is to load it up and take it to a weigh bridge and have it weighed. I would think that an awning and bikes could easily make it overweight.
The nose weight is the 5 - 7% thingy, of the loaded weight. It's usually around 75K.

Ours has a plate at the bottom, by the door, with the MPTLM .
Wizard9956 is the man you need for manuals. I'm no good at links but if you search under "swift corvette instruction" in the Caravans & Caravanning section, you'll find him. He has an email link.
Chickpea - the C&CC website has a "new to caravaning" section with links to some datasheets you might find useful. If you follow this link the one entitled "Safe for the road, safe on the road" covers thing like loading and noseweight.
