I'm sorry if this has been asked before. (Done a search and found nothing for trailer).

I have a Brenderup 1150s trailer (non braked) with standard hitch, Standard 50mm tow ball fitted to tow bar.

Do I grease the tow ball ?

Resurecting an older thread rather than create new, I've an older Golden Crown Caravan, braked, regular 'old style' hitch, and regular towball on a 1994 Discovery.

I assume I also grease? (towcar is new and hitch was uncovered and v dry, so might have been used with an ALKO).

Anyway, assuming I do grease, what type of grease do I use? I've some copper grease (back of brake pads) at home, also some LM Grease (brake pad sliding pins) from servicing my MX-5 - are either of these any good?

I was thinking the sort of grease used on wheel bearings would be best, if so what's that known as???

Don't use the copper grease, use the LM or wheel bearing type.

There's some great advice on here and I can usually find an answer to most things

I'm in the process of fitting my own towbar and also wondered about ball greasing. I find LM grease good for most jobs, but is there a rule of thumb as to how much and how often?

I normally put a dab on top of ball & spread it around before hitching up when I leave home. It lasts the whole trip. I also occasionally spray the hitch moving parts with spray grease, I suppose you could use spray grease on ball as well. All this assumes you have a standard hitch on whatever you are towing.

If its a caravan with stabilizer hitch then you do not grease anything & ball should be clean & shiny before hitching up.

And whatever grease you use, when you unhitch, IMMEDIATELY put the cover on the ball because if you don't your trousers will get covered in it !!!

And if you tow a caravan or trailer with a stabiliser hitch, Then make sure you clean that ball properly.

Those little hairline scratches will retain the grease and ruin the pads in the stabiliser.
