We're new to caravanning and have had a couple of great trips over the last couple of weekends, we have at present a vauxhall zafira 1.6 and are looking to now get another car/van to tow our 2 berth avondale rialto, just wanted to know what other people tow with and also is a van (been looking at a vauxhall vivaro) a good idea and why some sites don't accept vans, any help would be great..

A diesel version of the car you already have would tow caravan much better.

You will find that everyone you speak to has their own opinion on this, so you will have to make your own mind up.  Personnaly I like to tow with a small 4x4 currently a 2.0l diesal Suzuki Grand Vitara.  I prefer the higher driving position, they have large wheels, large cooling systems, large batteries and the 4 wheel drive has got me out of a few sticky situations with muddy pitches.  I have towed with a variety of saloon and estate cars incliding a Senator 3.0l but all in all I prefer the 4x4 but what ever you choose, make sure that you are within the 85% guide and that the car has plenty of torque although most have these davys!

Hi Caz, Like Brian I tow with a 4x4, mostly because it's all I've got!  Also I reckon the rig is more stable if the towing vehicle has leaf springs aft rather than coils, and a 4x4 is handy on soggy sites. As Tentz said a diesel would suit you fine, if it were me I'd go for a 1.9ltr or there abouts, which will give good towing power and be economic as a daily ride. The reason a lot of sites don't accept vans is because people working away from home will quite often take a caravan with them rather than pay fixed accomodation. Site owners do not see this sitting comfortably with folk on holiday. I wouldn't think a seperate vehicle for towing would make good economic sense in this day and age, unless of course you need another anyway. As Brian has said the crucial bit is to make sure you stay within the vehicle manufacturers towing limits and apply the 85% rule.

Have fun.

Del.

Confirming much of the above, deisel would be preferred. I'd look at a 1.9tdi and as long as you have done your sums on the 85% rule the choice is wide & varied.

I don't use a 4x4. Never needed one. Its personal choice & economics really. If it were me I'd go for a mondeo, passat, avensis.

The other reason vans are not popular on sites is because the travelling community use them.
