does anyone know if a 307 hdi 90bhp would be any good at towing a small caravan (1100kg)ish

It would be ok on the flat but slow on hills, I would stick to about 900kg for reasonable performance. Having said that, if you are ok with trucks passing you on motorway inclines then it will do the job.
