All they do is adjust the fuel rail pressure by feeding a false reading to the ECU, however they do it by feeding a constant misreading to the ECU, a resistor would vary in its adjustment as the resistance of the pressure sensor varied.
I had one on my sedona, worked really well for towing, It had a Connection for a switch, and prefered it turned off when solo. when towing, vary rarely needed to change gear, better low down torque.
Im doing a similar thing with my defender shortly, but theres no electrickery, just tweeking the fuel pump!
Do the eBay units not have a power supply? Every unit I have had has been powered, either from the battery like the DTUK units, or from the 5V power supply like the other 2. Some of the boxes out there might be resistors in a box, but I'm quite sure none of the units I have had have been.
The box I have now flashes its LED on startup until you rev the car past 3000RPM. As soon as you do the light goes solid and at that point the car goes noticably faster. I'm pretty sure a resistor in a box couldn't do that.
I have a box from energy tuning fitted to my Kia magentis 2.0 and it does make a difference ,mpg is slightly better, I get around 32/34 mpg whilst towing , but allround it is much nicer to drive, no lag less gear changing and they were very helpful not pushy, they were advertising in CC magazine and do chips for motor homes as well . I recently had car MOT done with box fitted and turned onto the settings I use and had no problems with emissions . Cost me £190 but I feel we'll worth it
