Waiting at the moment for the Mrs Disability/motorbility to come through, and just getting some idea's of which car to choose.

Don't have a 'van at the moment either but looking at a 4 berth cheapy......possibly Ace globetrotter.

Have narrowed our choice down but obviously lead times/up front costs etc play a part in the choice.

Our shortlist is
Vauxhall Zaferia 1.7 diesel
Nissan Qashqai 1.5 diesel
Citroen C3 Picasso diesel (personally I think this will be too small)

I want something that will be more flexable if we decide to upgrade to a newer/bigger 'van.

Fords are priced out of our range, and Rachel needs something "higher up" seating wise so "normal" cars are out of the equation.

If we don't get the result we want we are thinking of an older Xsara Picasso or Ford Galaxy.

What do you think?

None of the cars you chose can legally tow 85% of their kerbweights. Some very low towing limits.

You need to find out the max laden weight of the caravan. Older and smaller basic caravan maybe another option.

Lots of different Globetrotters, Sizes and weights vary a lot.

Mrs has Fibromyalgae and osteo-arthrites. That makes the Insignia and the Mondeo to low. That is why we are looking at people carrier/soft roader terratory.

I thought the Quashqai was quite a weighty car, same as the Zaferia (the 7 seater)

Speed and performance not to much of an issue.....I'm a fan of the old Lada's and currently get about on a 50cc moped.

Have just tried the whattowcar match website and all 3 seem to come out ok. The Quashqai has the highest kerbweight and a towing capacity of 1300 kg.

With only me, the mrs, the littl'un and the dog.....I don't think we will be going to much bigger (none of these twin axle jobbies)

I'd advise you to look at a Renault Espace 2.2dci, we've run them for many years & when my mother was alive my wife used to take her everywhere in it. The front seats swivel round which made it very easy for mother to get in & out of the car.

Ours ave always been used to tow caravns up & down to Cornwall several times a season & they handle the job very well indeed. They've all been 2.2dci manuals except the one we have now which is a 3.0dci automatic.

You can pick them up cheap nowadays too, I saw a 52 plate for sale in a small garage yesterday for £2200-00, had to be a bargain.

Lots of folk don't rate Renaults but, I seak as I find & ours have all been very good. The first two were 2nd generation RXE 2.0 petrols. Both suffered engine temperature sensors & one had a faulty fan sensor switch.

The next 2 were both  3rd generation, an RXE & a facelift Privelege 2.2dci. Both were very good with no major breakdowns apart from an air con condensor picking up a stone hole.

The one we have now is a Grand Espace Initialle 3.0dci, it's a cracking car, not worth a lot now though so it'll stay here until it runs no more. It pulls our van effortlessly & we ride in comfort so I see no reason to change it.

I think the diesel scenics come at sensible deposit, not the auto though, £299ish and have reasonable tow weight,

Weight of the car is not an issue some fairly heavy cars but the small capacity engines cannot tow 85%.

I guess thats a good thing until you have to stop on a steep hill.

Skoda yeti?   camping mag said unflappable towcar.

I don't think I'm ever likely to need anything bigger than 1300 kgs, the globetrotter I'm thinking of comes in at 900kgs max weight

All 3 of my initial choices would be fine for what we want, but which of the 3 would you choose?
